The Dye-Maker
A Tale of Dyes Earned
I have seen many things in my days. I’ve collected vibrant dyes from the Blooming Grove, and soft pastels from the Crystal Pools of my home. I’ve worked with Centaurs and Serthis alike, striving to achieve perfection in my craft. I’ve traded venoms, scales, and even armor for dyes I could never make myself, and I’ve traded my own supplies time and again for a decent meal and a night of peace and quiet. I have met many drakes from many professions, from guards to adventurers, cartographers to herbalists. Each held a respect for others and their crafts, and when advice applied to both their passions and ours, we swapped trade secrets to give each other that special business boost.
And yet, in all my years of dying fabrics and tapestries, I have never seen methods quite like hers.
Locke is a unique drake, pristine and dainty, and yet she has taken refuge right next to the Wyrmwound itself. She lives in a clan I’ve visited a couple of times, and my dear friend Liriel has taken refuge there until he can find himself a scroll of maturity, as a jaded client had conned him into using a scroll of eternal youth on himself by mistake. The two seem to work together, with Locke sewing the designs Liriel comes up with. And yet, it seems as if she dyes her own fabrics. I have never seen pieces of such hues before!
Her greens are as vibrant as the eyes of the Gladekeeper, her blues as deep as the sea. Her golds are brighter than the sun, her silvers more beautiful than the moon. Her pinks could easily be seen as the Arcanist’s blush, and her earthy tones could be lost if dropped upon the purest earth. And yet, her crimsons are the best to me.
I cannot quite place it. Where did she find those pigments? Was it the land beneath her feet? Was it somehow pulled from the sunset every twilight? Perhaps she had found a way to harness the deep red hues of the lava pools deep within the homeland of their breed, or maybe had found some rare flower deep within the Gladekeeper’s domain.
I do not know how she makes her crimson silks so bright and smooth, nor do I know where she goes to get that pigment. Yet I feel that I must learn. I must know how she does it. How are her colors so pure? How are her silks so evenly dyed? How did she make her stitches so neat and clean? I had to know.
I have offered to be her apprentice, to swap my own techniques for hers, and she’s accepted. I cannot wait to begin, and Liriel seems excited. He’s given me a first-aid kit for some reason, but I don’t mind.
I’m more worried about getting this little blood-stain out of my scarf. I don’t think such a rusty red would make a good first impression, especially on my blue pieces.
