Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?

I've been drifting for god knows how long. I've seen countless lifetimes, I've watched the world end a billion different ways. I've survived radiation, I've survived drowning, I've survived seemingly years of not seeing or speaking to a single soul...

Sometimes, though, I see you.

The cycles aren't too bad, sometimes. They're always different, but many times those differences are as minor as a bee landing on a blue flower instead of a red one. Ever heard of the butterfly effect? It's peaceful when little changes, though I hate to hear your gasping.

I hear you talking to yourself. Can you hear me, too?

You lament for your lost ones. Sometimes you scream at the deity that cursed you to fall, much like I have. Mostly you gasp for breath. You suffocate in the air, and air is usually what we are given.

You were not there when it first infected your friends. You were deep, deep underground, in the caverns. The groundwater is dark. It did not see you. And when you returned so many years later, they were enraged, they screamed at you, they tried to kill you.

And who could have let this happen?

Well, they were not answering your prayers, either.

...

I know what it's like to feel abandoned.

Surono, guardian of the water. You repeat your name to yourself, sometimes. Are you forgetting it?

I know it's hard. Sometimes I forget where I started, too. I wonder if my sky was blue when I look up at a green one.

And sometimes, when I fall into an ocean, and when fear fills my body and water fills my lungs... I hear you laugh, and celebrate, and swim for the few moments you are able. Often, even between realities, the desert is still cracked and dry, and it is your turn to suffocate. It is my luxury I have received the better end of this deal.

The waters are healing. Whenever you felt the tinge of disease, of possession, you healed. Whenever you saw the red sun looming on the horizon, you sank out of the sun's reach. I know it called for you. It was millenia before you answered.

But your god had abandoned you. Your prayers went unanswered. The blue sun was gone, and you heard the angry screams from your loved ones above the surface. The water was safe and cold and dark and you could breathe, most importantly, but you hated your own cowardice.

You had to ask what you could do.

Were you lonely?

Truthfully, I don't blame you. It's easy to be pulled in, it was an honest mistake. The red sun fights with wars of attrition, but it lives every moment of every possibility all at once. You cannot win with patience. It is patience.

It wanted to know how you were avoiding its possession. And you wanted to know what was happening to your fellow guardians.

Stalemate. The red sun does not budge from what it desires. Neither do you.

You did not tell it the secret of your healing. It did not tell you the secrets of its possession. But it wants you, Surono. It wants your powers. It wants the water. Then it would have—well, almost everyone.

But the people need the water, all the way up there. You provided for them, as you loved to do, as your brothers and sisters and siblings were sworn to do. Without you, they'll have no choice but to draw from the springs. It's all going according to plan. Weaken the guardian of the earth, until it finally falls to the red sun, too... and as long as you were there, and as incorruptible as you were, that could not happen.

Ideally, you would have been used to simply drown the guardian of the earth, but... well, you needed to be put out of commission without further delay.

So it cursed you to fall. Just like me. I suppose not quite the same circumstance for me, but... you know. It's all the same. We're falling, you and I, and we don't yet know how to stop.

...

Surono. Tell me about yourself, once you can breathe.

For now, hold your breath. Only a little longer, I smell the salt of sea. Don't try to rescue me. I'll breathe eventually. Drowning is just part of the routine, I do not suffer anymore.

Let's listen to the rain together.

Tell me, do you like the lulling drum of a distant thunderstorm?

Or do you remember it, still?

... it almost sounds like crashing waves.

sounds familiar..
