Biography

Acidveil
Denizen
Acidveil was once a regular resident of the Gladekeeper's domain, until an undisclosed event left him exiled from his home. He was gathered from the wilds a terrified hatchling, and raised among the Covenant despite his unique physiology. Clinging to his scales is an extremely acidic mucus that almost seems to yield a mind of its own, melting anything and everything it comes into contact with. Although Acidveil has been equipped with a magical aura that keeps his acid from tearing through the lair, the only respite his own body sustains is an incredible regenerative ability, healing his own wounds in mere seconds. Unfortunately, this means Acidveil is caught in a vicious cycle of burning, healing, burning, healing, and burning again. This process was unspeakably painful at first, but he grew accustomed to it over time. Now, the whole ordeal is little more than a chronic nuisance.

Crushed by the pressures of tragedy, loneliness, and incessant pain, Acidveil turned to pranks, jokes, and humor for relief from a young age. His snarky and quick-witted demeanor makes him both popular and disdained by many, not that he particularly cares. Acidveil is quick to distrust and see the worst in everyone, and struggles to connect with others. He forms unwavering bonds with those he does grow to feel comfortable around.

Ew old cringey writing ew

✦➤ Darkscale watched his mother prepare lunch for his brother and himself. Chop, chop, chop, the knife tutted as it bounced off the wooden counter, scolding some foul habit known only to itself. Beetles. He hated beetles. Spiders. He loved spiders. Of course, when handed his small leaf baggy, he knew exactly what he got, but he looked inside anyways. Beetles. He hated beetles. Then, Darkscale looked over to his brother, who shared his overjoyed smile. Spiders. He loved spiders. "Leafwing, Leaf! Wanna trade?" Darkscale recited, offering his decidedly disgusting lunch to his pale green brother.

✦➤ "O' course, Dark!" Leafwing's smile grew wider as they swapped bags. On cue, they looked up to their mother, who held the widest grin of them all. Sharing was caring, after all.

✦➤ "Now go play," Their mother laughed, "And don't stray too far into the forest today, or else the boogies'll getcha."

✦➤ "Pfa, no boogies gonna catch me, I'll pretend to be a plant an' they'll leaf me alone!" Leafwing chuckled as the hatchlings left together.

✦➤ "But Glassy said they liked rotten things, and you're the rotten-est tater-brain of them all!" Darkscale teased, running off into the forest, lunch grasped firmly in his tiny claws.

✦➤ The forest was a beautiful, expansive place for creatures so small. The few beams of light that shone through the dense, viridian canopy pierced the ground and created tall pillars of wildflowers, grasping for the sky with their electrifying, colorful petals. Vines and flowers and mushrooms of all shapes and sizes covered the trees so thickly, it was difficult to find the bark beneath it all. The grass and ferns and flowers sprouted so tall from the surface of the Gladekeeper's domain that the two hatchlings would have to climb to see each other. Of course, there was no need, for they had charted the entire forest in their own minds by now, having explored every nook, cranny, and mystery. And, as they were quite sure, there were no boogies to be found near their humble abode.

✦➤ Darkscale made it to the stump first, as he always did. He was older, after all, by an entire day. He sat quickly on the stump before him and tried to slow his breathing as he looked away, to appear as if he had made it there long ago, and was waiting impatiently for Leafwing to arrive. Leafwing was not fooled by this, and let out a scoff after he bursted out of the grasses. Together, they giggled, then sat in silence to eat their lunch together, as they always had.

✦➤ After finishing their lunches of spider & beetle sandwiches, the brothers simply sat and stared into the sky. The stump on which they sat must have had the greatest view in the forest. The canopy parted above them, drenching their scales in a warm, soft light. The wildflowers here grew like mad, all stretching and climbing and trampling one another to soak up that rare, beautiful light. They framed the sky like those fancy expensive picture holders Darkscale had always seen in the tailor's shop.

✦➤ Then, Darkscale looked down at his own cold, dark scales. Black. No one else in his family, nor anyone in his town, had dark, colorless scales like him. His mother was beautiful and opalescent, with bright violet wings and a pale green underbelly. His father was a vibrant green, with explosively orange wings and big red not-eyes that patterned his wings. His brother looked more normal. Pale green scales, green-green wings, and bright green not-eyes. Many of his neighbors might have seen Darkscale's coloration as a curse, but to him, it was what made him special. That... and his ability to heal any wound in a matter of seconds. He used to show this off but it... freaked people out. His mom made him stop. But he knew surely what it had meant- that the Gladekeeper had chosen him specifically to be special. That he had a prophecy to fulfill, like the heroes in the books he had to read.

✦➤ Darkscale tilted his head back, bathing in the sun and the serene chirps and hums of the life that saturated the world around him. Then, he felt something pointy jab into his side. He turned sharply to meet Leafwing's wide, mischievous grin. "Wanna play a game?"

✦➤ Next thing he knew, they were bolting through the grasses at blinding speeds, laughing and giggling as they chased each other over roots and under bramble thickets. Tag was a popular game for them. In fact, they played it nearly every day. This day, however, Darkscale was not to be outdone. He raced away from town, deeper into the wilds of the labyrinth. After all, the most exciting stuff was always the new stuff. After a while, though, Leafwing had slowed down. This was not familiar territory. This was boogie territory.

✦➤ "What? Are ya scared?" Darkscale taunted.

✦➤ "No! 'Course I'm not- it's just... Mom said-"

✦➤ "Oh c'mon, we'll only be here a few minutes. Let's just find somethin' cool and head out," Darkscale shrugged, lifting his nose into the air and taking in all of the unfamiliar smells. Then, something glistened out of the corner of his eye. "Aha!" He squeaked, "If you're not scared, prove it. Get dat coin out from under the shadowy place." The challenge led Leafwing to the base of an old, withered, sickly tree that radiated a foul aura, the primal, indistinguishable fear that told one to run far, far away. But Leafwing wasn't scared. He wasn't. Just had to... prove it...

✦➤ The green fae approached the tree's roots cautiously, eyes trained on the small, golden coin hiding in a hollow under its trunk. He wasn't scared. He wasn't scared. His sails turned a cold shade of grey as the blood drained out of them and into his racing heart. Then, he reached out, and stepped forward. And in the next second, he was falling. And in the next, he was quite stuck. And in the next... it began to get hot.

✦➤ Darkscale watched in shock as his brother had disappeared into the pit which had suddenly appeared below him. His brother's cracked, terrified voice shook him out of his startled trance. "Uh... Dark, Dark? It's hot, I can't get out- I think it's eating me! Dark! Dark! It's really hot! DARK!" Darkscale shot to his the edge of the pit Leafwing had fallen into, staring at the green goo that had ensnared his little brother. Then, he grabbed a hold of his sinking paws. Tears flowed from Leafwing's eyes as he repeated over and over "It's really, really hot- it's burning a lot! Mom's gonna be so mad- ow! Ow!"

✦➤ "Hold on- quit squirming! I'm pulling's hard 's I can!" Darkscale squealed, his voice torn and cracking to the sound of his brother's pain. They tugged on one another with all their might, through sobs of terror and anguish, until finally, Leafwing was tugged free with an odd squelch.

✦➤ The two sat in the cool grass for a moment, vigorously attempting to rub the burning acid off of Leafwing's legs and tail, sobbing pitifully and muttering incoherently. Then, one of Leafwing's sails dipped down unnaturally... and dripped onto the ground. The two stared at the drop, terrified. Then, without a word, Darkscale launched into a run, grabbing Leafwing and bundling his slowly melting, wailing form into his arms. "It's gonna be okay- it's gonna be okay-" Darkscale repeated between terrified sobs. He couldn't feel his burnt paws over his drumming heart. He ran and ran, trying to keep his rapidly deforming brother together, until finally they had broken into the clearing of their village. "Help!" Darkscale cried, although villagers were already rushing around them. But instead of helped, they just stopped, and stared.

✦➤ "Please, help! M- my brother!" Darkscale tried to speak, to explain, but instead, he broke down crying. The villagers stared. "Leaf, Leaf," Darkscale choked, shaking the gelatinous ooze that coated his arms and body. Its wailing died down, sobs lost to the bubbling, sizzling, burning green abyss. Darkscale looked around, and desperately called for help between sobs. "Mom! Mommy!" The fae wailed, but to no avail.

✦➤ Then, two stone-faced guards, an imperial and a mirror, pushed through the crowd, and pointed their spears directly at Darkscale as though he were some feral animal. "Leave." The imperial growled. And suddenly, Darkscale didn't know what to do. Their mother wasn't here- then maybe, maybe she was in her herb garden, south of town. And so, he ran, blinded by his own tears and fear and confusion.

✦➤ The hatchling ran as far as his burning legs could take him and his twisted, deformed brother, far past the boundaries of his home. He ran and ran, until the grass turned grey and brittle and the ground was mushy underfoot. The trees hung sickly, mournfully overhead and the chirps and hums of the green forests he knew had turned into hoots and caws and the perpetual chewing of maggots through decaying, fallen leaves. And then, when his legs could carry them no further, he collapsed in the hollow of a now-sizzling tree, and into unconsciousness.

✦➤ His dreams were almost as frightened, hurt, and frantic as his last waking moments, as Darkscale waded through knee-deep ooze towards his brother, who kept crying and calling out his name- but he would never turn around to face him. No matter how hard he struggled, he could get no closer to Leafwing. The ooze slowly pulled him under, into a dark, burning abyss.

✦➤ Darkscale awoke with a scream, practically leaping out of his bed- bed? His sore, thudding heart beat slowly, deeper as he took in his new surroundings. It looked like one of the nicer rooms at his village's tavern... but that wasn't his village anymore, was it? They threw him out! His brother was melting in his very arms and they threw them out! Darkscale stared furiously at the remains of his brother, burning now not only in pain but in the hatred he had felt for those cruel, heartless dragons. Then, his gaze softened. His brother. Leafwing. He puddled some of the ooze together in his shaking claws. "Leaf?" Dark croaked, "Can you hear me? P- please- please say something!"

✦➤ But the slime said nothing. It simply hissed and sizzled in his paws. Darkscale let out a high, mournful wail. "I'm so sorry- I'm so sorry Leaf, I'll fix th- this- I'll find mommy, she'll fix this- she'll fix this-" He hiccuped between each word, his fluttering lungs longing for a break from all of the chaos. His pitiful cries stopped short, however, as the door creaked open.

✦➤ A green bogsneak with the pinkest belly and the pinkest eyes he had ever seen leaned gently into the room with a startled, saddened look. Above it leaned a beautiful blue skydancer with wide, teary eyes. Their paws were bandaged.

✦➤ Darkscale scrambled instantly to the wall behind him, which hissed and sizzled away to Leafwing's touch. Quickly, the skydancer stepped forward. "We didn't mean to scare you, we mean you no harm." Its quiet voice rang gently. "I am Puddle, and this is MelonFlower-" MelonFlower waved, giving her most comforting grin- which wasn't comforting at all- "We're here to help. We found you lost in the woods, and we'd just like to ask you a few questions-" "Fun quethtionth," MelonFlower added hopefully, "-and send you back to your family. Is that okay?"

✦➤ Darkscale began to nod, but then quickly shook his head. "My village th- threw me and my brother out, mom d-didn't show up, they threw us out when- w- when-" the pitiful fae began to hiccup again, having used up all his tears and all his energy in his flight from his forest. The skydancer rushed over to his bedside, hovering a bandaged paw behind his back, the most comfort she could give.

✦➤ "I'm sorry, I understand. You may stay with us as long as you'd like. And- you mentioned- you have a brother?" A spark of panic danced in the skydancer's eyes.

✦➤ Darkscale nodded sullenly, cupping his claws and holding up a puddle of his own brother. "His name is Leafwing."

✦➤ The skydancer's eyes widened. She shot MelonFlower, who was beginning to shuffle closer with healing salves, the most subtle 'oh- oh no' look she could muster, and nodded. "I... I see. And- and what might your name be?"

✦➤ Darkscale looked down for a moment, calculating how he'd answer this normally simple question. He didn't feel like Darkscale anymore. Darkscale was abandoned when his clan had abandoned him. Now, he was something new, something fresher, something... sadder. He looked down to his brother, and suddenly, it all clicked.

✦➤ "I'm Acidveil."
