Twenty years ago,

His Royal Highness of the Flickerfell

                                                       died.

The Queen was not at all amused.

Surely, it was the full intent of the renegade troupe that took his life to wipe the Flickerfell monarchy clean from the face of the land for good.
But if it was, they failed.
They had commanded an impressive fleet of warriors -- most quick, many cunning, some powerful. But what they lacked in brute force they compensated for in numbers, and they were driven by a fierce and relentless passion that penetrated the defenses of a kingdom grown complacent.

A shard of ice pierced the reigning King's ribcage, what Raya knew was probably some show of melodramatic symbolism to them. Something about a King grown cold and a frigid heart.

She had had a lot of time to brood about that afterward. At the time, she had felt nothing of cold.
All that had coursed through her veins, through her heart, behind her burning eyes then was a white-hot, broiling
f u r y.

The rogues that had stood before the throne were swiftly disposed of by the Royal Crownsgard. Bleeding and scarred, the monarchy's trusted admirals fought tooth and claw through the hordes that flooded the hallways, a clear tactic of throwing sheer numbers at the warriors that so outclassed them to slow them down.

This, at least, had worked.

The Crownsgard was too late, and the King already lay bleeding, gasping his final breaths on the ornate, gilded pearl tile.

Vaguely, he heard the Crownsgard shouting, begging something of the Queen, whose claws he felt, clicking against his scales but tender as she ran them along the side of his neck.

The Queen did not reply to their shouting. He knew she did not, though everything sounded strange and faded, like he was underwater, muted beneath the rattling sounds of his own breathing echoing in his ears.

"Guile,"she spoke to him alone, her voice low and silken as flowing magma.
Somehow, through the pain and calamity, it still managed to bring him comfort.

The dark dragon exhaled, his muscles relaxing down the length of his great frame simultaneously

as a final,

sighing breath

escaped his bloodied maw.

The glimmering light in his crimson eyes grew fragile and dim as his heavy eyelids slid closed.

He entered the dark with the sound of his partner's purred lullaby of a promise echoing in his ears.
"I will see you again soon, my King."

What happened after this, Guile himself does not know.

The next time he reopened his eyes,
he was born.
