 It was even more beautiful than he had imagined. Suspended in midair, a shimmering iridescence only inches away. For once Fission found himself speechless. He stood there, slightly quivering in excitement, a goofy smile plastered on his face. It felt like there should have been a symphony orchestra playing behind him, celebrating his moment of triumph. Years of research and dedicated work had gone into this. Creating a portal capable of stretching both time and space. At last he had been met with success.

After what seemed an interminable stretch of time, Fission's hand lifted. Gently, very gently, he passed a tip of a finger through this portal. It met with no resistance, and he was surprised to find the temperature on the other side to be drastically different than in his lab. He yanked his hand back. The trouble was there was no telling what was on the other side. It could lead him to the other side of the universe in a far future or hurl him back in the past on this same planet. If he went through there was also no return. Passing back through the portal would only land him somewhere else, and that was only if the portal remained stable long enough for him to change his mind.

As if this thought took on a life of its own, the gateway in front of Fission began to fade. The time to make a choice was now. To remain in his lab and continue his research or to step through the portal and explore something he had never seen before. Fission's smile became more jubilant. With no further hesitation he passed through into the u n k n o w n.
