“Where did you find her?”
“Oh, fighting the butcher in the middle of the market-town.”
“Fighting the butcher?”
“He tried to short-change her.”
“I don’t have much money,” Ingela interjected.
“What if she has a family?”

Before the two dragons, Ingela, a small wildclaw, was gnawing enthusiastically on a cattle-bone. The shadows of tiny leaves dappled Ingela’s decorated wings. Closer to the base of the tree, Cega and Endo sat together, observing her.

“Ingela,” Cega asked gently, “do you have a family?”
“I do now!” She rasped, grasping for more food.

“Alright,” Endo answered, “That’s good enough for me. Do you have any talents, Ingela?”
“I don’t know,” She answered gleefully. Cega and Endo looked at each other.
“Well,” Said Cega to her partner, lowering her voice, “Anything’s worth a try, surely?”
“Surely, but we cannot put a young dragon we don’t even know in danger.”
“You’re mistaken. Ingela may look small, but you should have seen the way she challenged that butcher.”
“Where did she get all those weapons?”

Looking over at Ingela, she was using a scimitar to strip a bone of meat.

“I think she can handle herself.” Cega commented. Begrudgingly, Endo agreed.

“Ingela, can you help us?”
“You gave me food! I can help you.”
“Wonderful. You see -”

Far off, there was the stomping of tiny hooves.

“A band of Barkback Boars have made a camp under the tree just outside our territory. We like to use that tree for shade. They terrorise the hatchlings. When we try to chase them off, they run rings around us. Can you help?”
“I might just be able to help you,” Ingela answered, beaming.

Cega rose, and Ingela trotted cheerfully behind her. The two moved past dens, caves, and little trees, until they came to the large shady bough at the foot of the territory. Its foliage flowed in the light breeze, and it cast a blue shadow on the ground. Sure enough, underneath it, a pack of leafy boars played and tousled with each other.

Ingela cleared her throat. Upon seeing her, the boars instantly lined up defensively, kicking the dust with their hooves.

“What are you even doing here in the earth realms?!” Ingela asked. The boars froze, bewildered. Ingela continued approaching. “You shouldn’t be here!” She continued.

The boars kicked furiously, and prepared to charge. Ingela unsheathed her scimitar, its surface gleaming in the sun.
“Bring it on!” She yelled.

Ingela deftly dodged their charge and dashed behind them. The boars turned around, their movements muddled with this new setback. She slashed at the foliage on their barky backs, extracting a squeal from one of the unprepared hogs. She hopped sideward as one went to charge, and, scanning the group, attempted to identify its leader. She pointed the very tip of her scimitar at the largest boar’s nose.

“Leave this place!” She commanded. The boars braced, but as she drove her scimitar toward the leader’s neck, the group relinquished, backing away, and finally fleeing. Ingela turned to face Cega, grinning wildly.

“Well, Ingela, I cannot thank you enough, that was an impressive effort -”
“- Do you have any more?!”
