Life in the wards never suited Cassidy, not really. He performed his job dutifully enough, to be sure, but never with much enthusiasm; all that time, he spent awaiting something. Never certain over the years what that 'something' might be, of course, but he was patient. Through his watchful eyes, he learned many things about the Shade -- how could all the other Gaolers be so blind as to view the entity as pure evil? Gradually, he slipped into doing the unthinkable by speaking with Shade-touched dragons who pleaded with him for freedom. The Something became so blindingly clear that he soon had no option but to act on it: he set free as many Shade-touched creatures as he could before vanishing himself. His nose then led him to Elvira and Ramir, whom he has decided to protect from any other Gaolers who may wish them harm.
