They say Rain is hollow inside. They say she didn’t have a heart, snickering, laughing, and mocking. However, that was not true at all. Not true at all! She did have a heart, and it ached all the time, every word they say making it throb painfully in her chest to the pulse of the distant sea. It was the sea where she longed to be.
“Rain, why don’t you share something about yourself?” the arcane dragon instructor asked, interrupting her thoughts.
All the hushed whispers of her clanmates dying away, and they turned one by one to stare at her with eerie pink eyes. Rain backed away with terror in her eyes, not wanting to speak. Still, every dragon was waiting for her to speak, waiting to confirm the rumours of her curse.
“Thistle, marigold, rosemary, thyme,
I can not help but rhyme,”
she chanted, cringing at every word she spoke.
“My name is Rain,
A dragon, arcane.”
“I think that’s enough now,” the instructor interrupted quickly, frowning at her in disapproval. “Arcane dragons don’t say poetry. Speak properly, or don’t speak at all.”
Tears welling in the depths of her eyes, Rain opened her mouth and snapped it shut quickly, wanting to protest yet knowing the instructor will just hiss at her some more. A storm of snickers echoed across the training ring, the murmurs raging in her ears again. They were shrieking! They were crying! Cursed! She was cursed! She was shrieking!
She was crying…
Gasps of shock…
Eyes of disdain...
Rain leapt out the window, diving into the sea.
It was safe.
It was silent.

“I am the sea.
The sea is me.
I do not feel lonely.
I’m just dying slowly,”
Rain sobbed, blinking her stinging eyes rapidly.
Shaking her head in denial, she steered the pirate ship recklessly, hardly caring where she was going. Did it matter where she went? Did it matter if she died? Did anyone care about her? Did anyone even remember her name?
Angry wails thundered from the deck below her, the dragons trapped inside whimpering and begging to be free. It reminded Rain so much of the voices she heard not so long ago. Rain growled, clearing her thoughts of the furling memories she locked away. She wished the dragons would just be quiet for once. She was only holding them hostage for a little while after all. She just wanted them to stay with her. She just wanted them to understand.
“Please,” she would beg, her eyes darting from one dragon to another as she crept inside.
She gave each one a long, searching look, but they all glared at her and turned away. Those were not even the worst reactions. It was the terrified whimpers the young ones made, gathering together to hide in the shadows. How had everything gone so wrong?
Rain wasn’t scary. At least, she thought so. Why couldn’t they just see her as she truly is? Why couldn’t they accept her? Why don’t they understand?

Tendrils of wispy smoke trailed along the ruins, wrapping around all those that survived like chains. Rain wandered around the ruined buildings, skirting around the limp bodies of dragons scattered like fallen petals of a rose. Yes, the ground was even crimson like the setting sun that fell from the sky, the dark liquid glistening in the pale light. The worst part was that everything was her fault, but she really didn’t mean to. Sorry could never make up for all that happened.
Survivors that used to be chained to her ship milled about with horror in their eyes, sobbing at the sight of their family members. They shook their mothers, fathers, and children, willing them to come to life that were ruefully snatched away. One by one, they realized that could never be, glaring accusingly at Rain. She should’ve let them fight with their families, passing away honourably by their side. She should’ve set them free long ago, yet she didn’t. She should’ve known they will never understand.
She should’ve understood that.
Rain let them gather around her and slide out their dagger-like claws. Seeing the vengeful fires burning in their eyes, she dipped her head in acceptance, willing everything within her to disappear. She will not care! She will be hollow inside. She is nothing but empty air.
“Here I am among the slain,
One with the drizzling rain.”
Nothing said at all…

Theme Song - Dead In The Water by Ellie Goulding

If I was not myself
And you were someone else
I'd say so much to you
And I would tell the truth
Cause I can hardly breathe

When your hands let go of me
The ice is thinning out
And my feet brace themselves

I'm there in the water
Still looking for ya
I'm there in the water
Can't you see, can't you see
