"Few secrets have the power to destroy our world and everything in it."

- ODIN BLANKSCALE -

╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

Odin holds a reputation through Sornieth as a teacher. He was born in Shadow Flight, but that is a fact known by only a select few, and they know better than to pass on that information. His white coat gave him grief in the Tangled Wood, but his family lived there, and he stayed for their sake. Unable to blend in or be a useful hunter, Odin set about studying the secrets of shadow: a tortuous maze of dark knowledge. He learned a great many things that should never have been discovered, but still he kept pursuing knowledge, naively believing that the edge of knowledge would hold a light at the end of the tunnel. The end came, but no light was there only a secret so terrible, it could never be revealed to the world. He found the only avenue to summon the Shade back from the depths to which it was banished by the deities all those ages ago.

Upon finding this truth, his eyes widened in horror and his mind narrowed to one focus: this knowledge had to be destroyed. Odin committed treason: he stole thousands of forgotten scripts from the Archives of Shadowbinder. He took only what he deemed dangerous, and he stole them a little at a time, hiding them deep beneath the ground in a cave system that he hoped only he knew about. For a while, his activities went unnoticed, but just as he had stolen the last piece, he was caught. Dragged before the priests of Shadowbinder, the white dragon refused to even under torture to reveal what he had stolen or where it was hidden. Rather than punish him, the head priest was impressed with the thief. She bade him keep his secrets, but he should leave his home and only return when he was ready to join the ranks of Shadowbinder, although when he did, the head priest would ensure he endured a punishment fitting for his crimes. She knew he would flee, but that would make no matter in the end.

Seizing his chance, Odin fled in the dead of night, stopping only to burn the stolen manuscripts and collapse the cave system. But the last piece, the most important piece in the puzzle, he committed as his charge. He traveled from clan to clan, learning all that he could and making his living as a teacher, an archivist, and a sage, as it suited him. Eventually he was commissioned by a Lightning Snapper to instruct a young Guardian in the ways of divination. He completed the education of the young dragon, Precision, but he always feared that her gift would lead her to discover his secret. However, he successfully guarded his charge and his past, and he decided to stay in the clan for a small time.

Though the dragons there had no knowledge of him beyond his teaching abilities, he found himself becoming fond of Clan LockCharge. Eventually the desperate need for an archivist led Fethryn to offer Odin a job. He tentatively accepted, and although he promises himself each and every day that he will leave soon, he never does. Over the years, he has found a brother and friend in Jupiter and a daughter in Ganymede. Although the latter is mentally incapacitated, they communicate remarkably well. Odin speaks to Ganymede as though she were normal, and she affectionately refers to him by his sign name “Reeds” – a sign that merges the signs for writing and the letters R and O. Although Odin does not realize it, Ganymede associates with him with the scruffy reeds that grow all over Sornieth, one of which Odin uses as a stylus. She doesn’t carry a passion for writing, but she knows that Odin, like the reeds, has been everywhere and carries a small part of “everywhere” with him. She is one of the only dragons to know his birth flight, as his cowl covers his eyes and his glasses hide them still more, but Ganymede knows the importance of keeping secrets.

Unexpectedly and ironically, Odin found love with a dragoness from the same flight he was determined to avoid. Abeille came from Shadow Flight, but her path has taken her all over Sornieth and eventually, into his arms. Their courtship began with Odin frequently visiting Abeille under the guise of collecting knowledge on bees. Although he already knew most of it, Odin allowed the quiet Guardian to impart all her knowledge unto him while he dutifully recorded it for the archives. He spent many days in this fashion, and when Abeille left to satisfy her occasional fits of wanderlust, she never failed to bring him some scrap of information from whatever places she had visited. Eventually, their courtship resulted in three children, but tragedy befell each of them. Whether this was part of Shadowbinder's revenge or an unhappy coincidence, it has scared both Odin and Abeille out of parenthood, for now anyway. Still, they live happily together, enjoying one another’s company and the remainder of their lives.

Although Odin knows he must return to Shadowbinder at the end of his life, he is perfectly happy to stay where he is until that day. After all, it is not everyday that one finds a family.
