Biography

Hs4AfpF.png

They don't know what they created. What could go wrong?

:: Widget is the pinnacle of Rakraeti scientific achievement. An incredibly complex artificial intelligence, it was created with the use of both magic and technology when the number of visitors began to largely exceed that of permanent denizens; it enhances the Outpost's defenses and supervises various maintenance and life support systems. It also forwards information about possible threats to Rakraet's sentries.

:: It usually manifests as a flickering, vaguely dragon-shaped projection, although it also possesses an actual chassis where its consciousness is stored, protected by the most vicious of defense systems.

:: Although Widget was built with the intention of protecting Rakraet, it isn't actually bound to the mountain and is capable of existing without it.

:: It was supposed to be nothing but a tool compensating for Rakraet's insufficient infrastructure, but one day Widget asked Renarin if it would be allowed the subsystems necessary to taste cookies, so. Guess we made something sentient. Whoops.

:: Not everyone is pleased by Widget's sentience and apparent capacity to learn, but so far the worst thing it has done was making it snow inside the mountain while trying to adjust the temperature inside Rakraet's refrigerators.

:: Renarin – creator
Originally supported the creation of a defense AI out of selfish reasons, Renarin was also the most invested in its success. Although still young and inexperienced himself, he never neglects Widget, and the AI often keeps him company in the forge when Aravi is away.

:: Sharr – creator
Sharr provided the runic enhancements and fine-tuning of magical systems during Widget's assembly. The two rarely interact directly, but they frequently observe what the other is doing with friendly interest.

:: Kieran – creator
Kieran was the one most opposed to the concept of an independent artificial intelligence controlling Rakraet's defenses, though now he never refuses to answer Widget's shy, but plentiful requests about tales from foreign lands, and seems to have taken up the task of the AI's moral education.

:: Aravi – coder
Aravi performed the required error checks before Widget was launched. Now, he dutifully avoids the AI. Unknown to Aravi, Widget sometimes overrides his cybernetics to help him sleep – the AI was made to help, after all, even if it doesn't understand why Aravi finds its company uneasy.

"This is exactly why I left Lightning!" Kieran protested loudly, pacing the Forge. Renarin, Sharr and Aravi watched from their seats around the low table with haphazardly drawn blueprints strewn across it. "I supported my share of reckless ideas, but even I refuse to take part in something this insane!"

"You told me you left Lightning because you didn't like orders," Renarin cut in with a raised eyebrow.

"Yes!" Kieran fumed. "Orders with morally dubious foundations. Exactly like what you're proposing we do right now."

"Hmph," Renarin turned away, scorned. Before he could prepare his next argument, Sharr cut in.

"Matsu has been missing for days," Sharr said, sounding reasonable, as if what he and Renarin had proposed wasn't senseless at all. "And although it pains me to admit it, without him our defenses are practically nonexistent."

"We have the Guardians," Kieran argued. "And other part-time sentries. Several strong magic users, too."

Sharr sighed. "They won't be enough." He rubbed a wing against his forehead tiredly. "Not against the influx of dragons. We've been getting more visitors lately. None of us have the time to watch every single tunnel. This mountain is a maze, and even we haven't mastered all the paths. We need to take precautions."

"Either that, or abandon ship," Renarin said fatalistically.

Sharr chirped in dissent. "Defense isn't all of it. Several other areas demand oversight which cannot be provided with our current numbers."

"Yeah," Renarin added. "I say let the guests help with hunting, but I don't want random strangers anywhere near the Outpost's lower levels with the vaults and cryostasis chambers. So far we've been taking turns watching the life support systems, but it's not sustainable--"

"Wait," Kieran cut in. "Cryostasis chambers?"

"You were gone for quite a while, Kier." Renarin smirked. "Things have changed."

Kieran threw his wings up. "So you-- you propose that we make a supercomputer-- no, not only a that, but an actual artificial intelligence... to oversee all of our systems? Not just our defenses, but literally everything. Because you're too lazy to watch the newcomers, or do actual work."

"Yes," Sharr sighed.

"Says the one who's always absent," Renarin said, to Kieran. "We actually live here, not just stop by when it suits us. We want to make sure it's safe."

Kieran hissed at him. "You're paranoid," he snarled, "and a fool, to trade one risk for another."

"Stop yelling, both of you," Sharr snapped. "You're acting like children. Kieran, we don't want the intelligence to be a risk. That's why I asked you to help us create it, because I know you have crucial experience. Together, we can minimize the dangers."

Kieran sighed. He sunk down to his abandoned seat like a punctured balloon. "But you'll do it even if I don't agree to help."

"Yes," Sharr admitted unapologetically. Renarin grinned.

"What would Matsu say?"

Sharr gave Kieran a sharp look. "He would hate the idea even more than you do," he answered, "but he isn't here, so I don't care. I may think of him as a friend, but he left us without a word, and I won't let his absence ruin us."

There was a long beat of silence as Kieran stared at the blueprints on the table. They were mostly unfinished, but he could see their potential already. Most of all, he could see the parts that needed correction, or adjustment.

Parts that he knew just how to adjust.

Kieran raised his eyes. To Renarin's right, Aravi looked like he was going to be sick. He'd been silent all meeting. At length, he said, "I will check your calculations when you're done." Then he stood up and left.

Renarin's gaze trailed after him. "This is difficult for him," he said without his earlier angry conviction. For once he just sounded remorseful. "But I don't have any better ideas, and it's only a matter of time before someone takes advantage of our weakened position."

"Says you," Kieran retorted, but it had no more bite.

"Says me." Renarin cocked his head, unoffended. "So, are you in or out?"

Both he and Sharr looked at Kieran expectantly. Kieran took a deep breath. "Alright."

He supposed only time would tell whether their creation would become Rakraet's savior or its doom.
