Bad things always happened during the night. In the dark hours of the night, a couple bathed under the soft lunar light from the comfort of their nest. Taking turns nuzzling each other in affection as they gazed silently at the beautiful scenery in front of them. After this night, they knew, everything would never be the same again. It was time, the young female took three slow deep breaths as she felt the first few contractions. She gazed lovingly into her partner's fearful eyes. He licked her cheek and took deep breaths of his own to calm himself down. They were going to lay their first clutch. Baring down, she pushed with all her might. At each push, pain shot through her body like lightning. The constant aching pain as she rested between contractions was a reminder to her that she couldn't give up. Then finally, one singular egg was laid. Hot, wet tears spilt from her eyes as her partner tucked their bundle of joy between them and nuzzled her cheek as congratulations on a job well done. Suddenly, small specks of red and gold lit up in the distance. The male's eyes widen. Bolting upright and spreading his wings as wide as he could, he let out the most soul-wrenching roar. Hot burning coal was raining from the sky at an alarming rate. Humans have found their little paradise. Shedding a single tear, he turned towards his mate and nuzzled the exhausted female one last time. As the specks got closer, he rushed to cover his mate and their newly laid egg, wrapping his wings protectively around both. The female, too exhausted to move, begged and pleaded for her mate to bring their egg to safety. Tears blurred her vision as she continued to roar her sorrows at her mate. He would not budge, her stubborn mate refused to leave her behind. As the humans got closer, all the pair could do was say their final goodbyes. They prayed for their offspring as they slowly slipped away, feeling the blood drain from their once warm bodies. .... WeiFeng never got the chance to meet her parents, much less watch them grow old. However, she is thankful every day for the life she has been given; no matter how little she had and how difficult it was to live through each day, she felt so blessed just being able to open her eyes every morning. She had hoped that one day she will be able to make her parents proud, where ever they may be. ________________________________________ |
