It’s hard to grasp onto an existence so fleeting.

Words fading into whispers.

Holding onto warmth until it fizzles into dust.

Cold. But not even that, hollow. An absence of temperature.

Thoughts swirling in a hazy current with no end and no start. Memories pooling together, becoming faint conglomerations of color and touch.

Faithfully. They served faithfully.

The longer they were there, the more of themself fell through the cracks.

Something that’s sharp and loud that grates against their mind. Something red and yellow and looming that they think is supposed to be pretty, but aren’t quite sure. Burning, something that flares and slices in their chest, but they have an itching feeling it should hurt worse.

As much as they desperately digged their claws into the memories that burned the brightest – were the most clear – they always dissolved eventually, as if they’d never existed in the first place.

Their meanings had long been choked and smothered, lost after centuries spent trapped. Trapped in that ring.

The waiting was the most excruciating part.

Watching the sun and moon chase each other, days blurring together into years, too fast into slow all the same time. More times than not, they were left somewhere dark or walled in. The musky wood of a chest or the damp stone bricks their only company.
They were nothing until someone else donned that ring. Merely a consciousness slowly caving in on itself. So frustrated it was nauseating, but unknowing why. A sadness so heavy, like iron coating their very bones, yet without a body.

But the moment someone donned that ring, it almost seemed worth it. The relief was nearly blinding, somehow like a punch in the gut and a gentle embrace all at once. To breathe and have lungs filled. To have a hand to reach out with. To talk and be heard. To live.

It almost seemed worth it, whatever their new master made them do.

Faithfully, always faithfully.

Raze armies under lightning and storm. Hear the screams of life being wrenched away. Boil bodies and villages down to their bones until the scent of flesh and ash clogged the air. Stand by tyrants, imbue them with strength and allow them to rule, to hurt others, to kill, to destroy.

Something. Everyone always wanted something. To be allowed to exist, they had to give something. More somethings than they would ever willingly give. But the ring didn’t care about their will.

And neither did any of their masters.

No matter how faithfully they served, how they clung to their masters, they were eventually alone again. Fulfilled their every wish. Laughed at their jokes. Let themself be used however their masters wanted, not shying away from unwanted touches or lingering gazes.

That was their price to live.

So Virhanus served faithfully.

Trivia and Other Notes

~ Virhanus is an ancient entity that can be summoned when an individual wears the ring their soul is bound to (and cannot take a physical form unless their ring is worn). At one point, Virhanus was alive as a normal dragon, but over time their memories of their original life have become lost to them. He doesn't know what happened to get his soul bound to the ring, but he assumes he wouldn't have been put into this miserable existence if he hadn't done something worth punishing.

~ Is a very sweet but confused entity. Is eager to please but not experienced interacting with others and is constantly second-guessing themself. doesn't understand why everyone leaves them in the end and is very sad about it. lets themself be mistreated because 1) doesnt know any better 2) desperate for interaction

~ His physical form is ever-changing and unstable. Most of his body appears as a condensed smoke with the amount of limbs and eyes he has shifting with his emotions.
