“Do you know, young ones, of the demigod of night and light?” The great Imperial reared her head, taking in the group of hatchlings before her. They all stared up at her wide-eyed and eager. The first was a pearly Coatl girl with the markings of a skink, male Skydancer twins with black and grey fur whose markings circled to form rings, and the last was a small Pearlcatcher with wings colored as the leaves above them and a body colored like the wood that surrounded them. Her eyes shown the brightest of all, eager to hear the story of her elder and her tail curled up around her pearl, clutching it close. All four shook their heads.

“Well,” the Imperial continued, leaning closer to her entourage. “Here is the tale of Khonsu. It was deep in the First Age that saw the birth of the glorious Lightweaver and tricky Shadowbinder. Their feud was so epic that it turned the Lightweaver’s days to ash and the Shadowbinder’s nights to exuberance. While the sisters quarreled of many things it was the Lightweaver who felt as though she was not given enough. She desired more light in the world. The shadows dominated the day where an object stood in defiance, yet no light was made in the darkest of nights, save those few where the light of the Flameclaller’s fires illuminated all.”

The Imperial shifted her head slightly, her dark mane flowing gently in the breeze. She continued, “The creation of Khonsu is shrouded in as much mystery as he is. The old tales say that the Lightweaver made him out of dust – brought forth in a blinding light to bring her glory to the shadowy night she loathed. Other tales say that he was an imperfect deity created in the wake of Shade’s first influences. Either way, Khonsu came into this world near the end of the First Age.

“He is said to have brought light to the night, hence his title. The stars are his children and the cosmos his sisters. With the creation of stars in the night skies, the Lightweaver found herself on equal footing with her sister, who loathed the twinkling spots that shone brightly in her beautiful nights. It is said that the fights that erupted between the LIghtweaver and Shadowbinder caused battles so dreaded that the very planet shook. The arrival of the Shade saw Khonsu leave his creator and travel to the far distant lands yet undiscovered. Due to his depa-“

“Wait!” One of the Skydancer twins shot his arm up, talons clacking. “How do we know that he traveled to undiscovered lands if they’re undiscovered? Wouldn’t it be impossible to know where he’s gone?”

The Coatl to his left snapped, “Oh hush, Yandu. She’s getting to it.” The tiny Coatl turned her head back to the elder Imperial before her. “You were getting to that, right?”

“Yes, little one, now settle down all of you. As I was saying, Khonsu’s departure left the eight deities to construct the Great Pillar to contain all but him. Since he was not present for its creation, he had no place within it. When the Second Age began, Khonsu continued his magical influence. His purpose in creation was lighting darkness and ushering in change. The Second Age saw the first hints of life that were not the eight, and Khonsu had much to do with that. You see, little ones, you were born of eggs. Many other creatures are born of their mothers’ wombs, but all still form in the darkness and are brought into the light.”

The Imperial heard a hushed whisper, ‘except the Shadow dragons…’, but chose to ignore it. She cleared her throat and continued, “Khonsu is the only being know to have survived the cataclysm that ended the Second Age and the only to know what magnificent creatures existed during that time, or truly how long the era lasted. For all we know, the Second Age lasted a hundred years, or even hundreds of thousands.

“What we do know, however, is that Khonsu lived through it. Every so often the Light dragons unearth new revelations of times long past that speak of a great winged serpent that prowls the night skies. He is said to have stars on his hide, and the eyes of a nebula. It is unknown what his connection is to the Arcanist, if one exists at all. Those of the Second Age inscribed his name as ‘Khonsu’ in their writings, and many of the Lightweaver’s brightest children believe this to mean ‘traveler’.

This name is fitting for our demigod of night and light. He is a pathfinder, known for protecting dragons that travel the nights from roaming clans of beastclan marauders. He is especially protective of hatchlings, whom he knows to have just witnessed his gift to them as they hatched. If you ever see him, littles ones, know that he carries a pendant carved of a waning moon and shimmers as he passes. His arrival brings good fortune, and his heralding is nothing to fear.”

As the sun began to set, the elder Imperial shooed the hatchling off back to their parents and warm nests. While the Skydancer twins carried on, the Coatl and Pearlcatcher girls hung back, discussing the stories they had learned that day. “I particularly enjoyed the story of the Coatls learning to speak! It makes me wonder if I can learn my ancestral language someday. Maybe my Mama knows som-”

To their side a loud crash was heard, stopping the four hatchlings in their tracks. They ran to each other, none old enough yet to fly. Huddling close, Yandu letting out a small yelp before being hushed by his brother. Suddenly, a small thud and a rolling sound was audible, a tiny ball shape rolling quickly away from them down the incline they traveled up going back home. The Pearlcatcher girl scrambled, “My pearl!”

“Alina! No!” Her friend called. But it was too late. Just as Alina grabbed her pearl in-mouth a huge centaur reared from behind the brush. Kicking his hooves and hollering, he charged at the young dragon and she trembled. She screamed, closing her eyes shut as she held her physical soul close. It was a wet, tearing sound that shook the evening. Finding that she was not, in fact, dead, Alina opened her eyes to the centaur sprawled out before her, legs twitching as he bled out from a gaping wound across his lower back. Alina yelped and turned to run back to her friends, all as frightened as her.

They ran as fast as their legs could take them home, the older Skydancer boys flapping their wings weakly on pure instinct alone. Alina could never truly be sure, but as they crested the ridge that surrounded their home clan’s territory, she could just barely make out a figure made of stars gliding gently as he passed over, as if watching their return to ensure their safe passage home. She saw him once more as she curled in for the night, bidding their protective demigod goodnight.
