Augustina knew her field work was dangerous. After all, medicinal healers were everywhere but it took real skill to understand the flora and fungi that created the medicines. Anyone could learn how to combine already picked plants and mushrooms and algae to create healing lotions and potions. Yet Augustina was one of the few that actually harvested the rarest of ingredients. It was easy to grow some of the plants and fungi in controlled settings, but they were rarely the best. There was just something about the wilderness and the struggle to survive that helped some of the medicinal flora become even more potent. Finding the best places to harvest the ingredients, knowing the safest routes, and then successfully collecting them without getting harmed or ruining the flora or fungi in the process was another part of the job. That wasn't the dangerous part. It was thieves. Trackers. Wannabe collectors following talented herbalists and then slitting their throat to steal the spoils. Augustina knew this was a danger of her work. She proudly wore the scars from such attacks as a testament of her skills in battle as well as collecting. Her life's work was fun and entertaining, dangerous and exhilarating. It was a job she could not live without.

An enemy she never thought she would have to fight, however, was the very subject of her work. A collection gone wrong. A foe she never saw coming. Of course, she knew such an enemy existed. She had seen some insects wandering around, lost and confused, with the fungus escaping through their very body. She knew the effects of the cordyceps. Despite the knowledge, she did not expect a dragon to fall prey to the fungi. Maybe it was that some dragons were not strong enough to support the fungi as a permanent host. Maybe it was because the fungi didn't know how to care for a dragon body in order to keep it alive. Maybe the fungi had learned through trial and error. The decomposing bodies of former dragon trials left to rot under the bed of leaves. Hidden by nature. Hidden from Augustina. At first the attack meant nothing. Some spores had risen from a careless step and, of course, she breathed some of them in. It was only a few hours later, going home with her spoils, did she feel any different. Like something clouding her mind. Next came her body feeling like it was weighed down. Her immediate cure was to sleep off the weariness now resting deep in her bones. She did not know that waking up meant not being in control of her own body or mind.

Cordyceps. That is what they called themselves. Straight to the point. Honest. No individuality within them. There is some semblance of an individual within the dragon they had possessed, they can hear her voice calling out to them. Sometimes, they let her shine through. A thanks for the body, but otherwise, there is no need for her to rise. Perhaps other dragons find them strange. No emotions. No inflection in their voice. No expressions on the face. Yet there is no need for any of that. The strong transportation they have allowed the ability to travel far out of the forests. Away from the rest of the colony to spread. Dragons had adopted the term “hive mind” to describe the fungi as a whole. For the most part, Cordyceps has to agree with with the term. They all work towards the same goal, sharing the same thoughts and wishes. It made existing so much easier. If only they didn't have to work so hard to keep Augustina buried deep within her own thoughts. If anything, she should thank the fungi! They have proved a much simpler life, one without the worry of choices or struggle. If only the dragons and beasts could learn to understand that, but it is such a shame that most die from the infection. Only the strong can resist death.

Perhaps it was only fate that Cordyceps found a clan to live in, protected by dragons. Their unique skill set was useful. After all, spores are useful in infecting unwelcome visitors, weakening the body and the mind until the fungi can take over. Although, the fungi cannot control multiple hosts at once. The weakest of hosts die off, be they animals, beast, or dragon. Even at times, Metatron gives Cordyceps permission to turn prisoners. When possessed by fungus, the lips become amazingly loose. An extra benefit is that the prisoners don't have to be kept alive once they have spilled their secrets. Perhaps such a job can be seen as an insult to Augustina's memory, but Cordyceps doesn't concern themselves with such woes. Augustina is safe, her body well taken care of and her will sometimes allowed to rise above the control of the fungi. Can she really ask for anything else?
