He didn't ask for this. No one did. It was one thing, when the little hatchling sat alone in the brambles, coughing up his pearl, wondering where his parents had gone. It was another when he tried to move, only to discover his delicate wings caught in the brambles. His tail was caught in the brambles. He clung to his pearl, crying out as the thorns dug into him, threatening to tear his wings' membrane.

And then there was laughter. And his tears were stifled, sounds caught in his throat. And the brambles closed in. Thinner vines wrapped around his legs and neck, a thorny crown adorning his head. He would've shivered, but he dared not move. His eyes closed. He sat there for gods-know how long. He grew up far too quickly. The brambles and shadows became one with him, and he became one with them.

The other Pearlcatchers eye him suspiciously when he asks to join their caravan, staring at the brambles growing from his wings and the black pearl clutched in his claws. He doesn't blame them. But they accept, because of course they do, and he and his mate fall right in line along with them. But they all take a step back when the ichor he coughs up onto his pearl is purple. He doesn't blame them. It's a sick irony, he thinks, that Pearlcatchers were created by the Lightweaver, only for the Shadowbinder to take them and twist them in Her servants.

He doesn't say anything to it. The Shadowbinder is his master, and he is her prophet. He will spread the darkness. He will be the shadows. He will stand as the King of the Dark.

He remembers his helplessness. While he might not be able to feel or act as normal dragon would… he does his best. He is as kind and compassionate as he can be (debatable what that looks like and how much it actually amounts too with being a shadow priest and all that).
