There had always been a constant burning within her. It was small at first, more like a constant warmth than a fire. She frolicked in the snow as her mother watched from the uncomfortable heat of their nest.

At some point, it started growing. From the comforting rays of sunshine to a crackling fire, burning, burning, burning. It was not long before she left the tundra, searching for a colder place, deeper within the realm of the Icewarden. She craved the hissing winds, the dance of the snow around her. A solitary figure within the empty field.

It hurt, as she lay on the cool ice, snowflakes blanketing her like a mother would. It hurt, as she watched the sky, flakes dancing above her, twirling, whispering sweet words to her. It hurt, as they covered her, slowly, slowly, ‘til she could no longer see the darkening sky. They told her it was okay, told her to sleep, and she did.

She dreamt.

Dreamt of the cold. Dreamt of the whipping winds and the biting frost. Dreamt of ice and snow and gales. How oddly comforting it was, more like a mother than her mother had ever been. It hugged her and she hugged it back. It taught her how to live, how to chain down the flames. It smiled and told her it was time.

She emerged from the ice like a butterfly from a chrysalis.
