Biography

But What Are Stars Without the Darkness?

With darkness creeping out along the stones surrounding the massive, arcane-charged tower, one might think its occupant would be afraid. Terrified, even, that the Shade’s creatures had decided to come after it in full force.

But what are the stars without the black void around them? Why, if everything were bright and happy, it would be monotonous and boring. No change to further accent the shining light all around the world. Dragons would be blinded by the overabundance of it all.

So, as the tower’s light dimmed, and the dragon-like shape emerged from the shadows all around them, the dragon within the tower smiled and finished affixing the device to his scales. The rows of strategically placed bits of lightweight metal, each with a different sized hole, clattered together as he clambered out of the tower’s top hatch.

This wasn’t the Shade’s minions planning to attack. He wouldn’t have stayed if it were.

Silver horns glinting in the fading light of his tower’s beacon, Glauring hooked his claws over the tower’s edge and peered down at the shadowy mass below. A soft breeze blew by, and the holed pieces of metal all produced a soft, humming note. A smile crept across his face...

The shadows crept ever closer, the draconic figure in the lead seeming to almost resemble a skydancer...

A piece of stone fell from beneath Glaurung’s claw...

The beacon faded to a soft, barely-visible pink glow...

The shadows crept closer...

The breeze stilled…

Light erupted from the beacon, and Glaurung flung himself skywards, straight into the gusting wind that greeted him like an old friend. Twisting and contorting his body every which way, the multi-horned spiral began to dance. Ignoring the shadows that were now slicing up the tower’s walls with wild abandon, he danced like no one was there.

The song that filled the air as the wind whistled over the holed pieces of metal strapped to his body became wild and elated. It jumped from one note to the next, swelling with the ever-growing wind that began to swirl around the tower. He followed the wind as it whirled him in circles, twisting and turning, even letting his own voice join the song he made.

The shadows whirled off of the tower, reaching into the air like wrathful vines, snapping left and right to try and ensnare the Spiral.

Glaurung laughed, letting himself plummet straight down towards them, then swerve wildly to avoid the grasping darkness. All the while, he continued twisting and contorting his body in the pattern he’d practiced for weeks, hitting each and every note with as much accuracy as he could muster in the moment. The metal clattering together almost provided a beat to the song, though the howling of the wind nearly drowned it out.

Somehow, though, the louder the wind howled, the louder the song became, as if the magic of the tower was amplifying it.

The shadows almost seemed to halt, as if confused by his active approach. The dragon-like figure that had chosen to lead them faltered as well, silent wings stilling as the Spiral wound towards them. What was he doing? Would he not attack them?

His song changing, quieting slowing for a moment, only to begin rising in passion and volume once more, Glaurung swooped through the raised shadows. He swerved to loop around the draconic figure, corkscrew-spinning in an upwards spiral to create a rising crescendo.

This was exactly what he’d hoped for. A chance to reach out, to show them why he’d been poking around their home.

Not to harm them.

He wanted to understand them.

He wanted to help them.

The shadows swooped towards him, but now with a different approach. Instead of reaching up to ensnare him, they swirled around in the air with him, playing along with his song and dance. The wind’s howling almost seemed to become joyful as the light of the tower shone through the gaps in the darkness like stars on a dark night, and the look on Glaurung’s face couldn’t have mirrored that any more.

His song swelled once more, and the dragon-like shadow was by his side in his dance. She seemed curious, and despite her disbelief… hopeful.

Smiling ever wider, Glaurung offered her his talon, and, together, they wove their way into the skies, their dance bringing a brief harmony between the tower’s light and the darkness. As the wind howled and their dance wore on, swirling around the tower, the dragon that seemed made of shadows slowly began to coalesce into a more physical form.

Crystals of all colors grew out along the mottled skydancer’s chest and head, and her wings became dotted with stars. In turn, Glaurung’s scales dimmed from pure white to a soft gray, his horns becoming a dull charcoal as their harmony grew stronger. Shadow-trailing eyes met runelit ones, one pair holding disbelief, the other holding pure happiness.

And together they danced, shadow and arcane, darkness and light, mixing together with a magnificent crescendo, and a meeting that neither side had ever expected to achieve.
