Biography
MORRIGAN
Daughter of Death
Daughter of Death
When one gains life in such close proximity to death, is one truly living?
Morrigan has never known what life is like. Born to a reaper and a minister to the dead, she grew up not knowing what it was like to be alive. Her existence was somewhere on the cusp between life and death, never truly understanding either. Yet she could hear the spirits of the dead even from a young age.
At one point Morrigan wanted to seek out a new clan to try and better understand her predicament, and that was when she met Raven, a herald of the dead who didn't know what to make of her. He took her back to the main camp of the Sassmaster Clan, where Rhodochrosite looked over her. The seeress couldn't sense anything about her, given that she could only follow the destinites of the living.
"I don't understand," she mused as she continued to search for young Morrigan's path, "why does she have nothing here? She lives, but to me she is already dead..." Rhodochrosite looked over at Raven. "How can this be?"
"She is not dead either. I would have sensed if she had died. Perhaps she is not of this world..."
Just then Morrigan screamed out, clutching her pearl tightly. Her head was filled with the anguished cries of the spirits. She pleaded for them to stop, not understanding why they would target her like this. "It hurts..." She looked between her new guardians, trying to find some solace there. "Why..."
Rhodochrosite sighed. "I wish I knew, child. But I'm afraid that we can't help right now." She tried to comfort Morrigan as best as she could. "You're an unusual one, so we have to find out what's wrong. Raven, you'd better tell Data. He may have something to help calm her down, a gadget or something..."
But even the brilliant-minded Coatl had nothing. "There's no sort of device I can make, magical or not, that would help. I'm afraid that her condition is beyond anything I can do."
As Morrigan grew up, she found that the voices in her head grew quieter at times. And during those times, she could go about her 'life', asking the clan's outfit planner Regina to make her look pretty. And when the voices got too loud, she hid away and didn't come out. All this time, Rhodochrosite and Raven were trying to make sense of the voices she said she was hearing.
It was then that it all seemed to make sense.
"I know what it is." Raven had pulled Morrigan aside to speak with her, although being near him made the voices so loud that she couldn't hear her own thoughts. "You can hear the voices of the dead. It seems that the circumstances of your birth were strange ones indeed."
Just then Rhodochrosite walked over, her head bowed. "I remember now. You were not just found. I remember a Wildclaw approaching our clan, clearly one who dealt with the dead constantly. She brought you to us, saying that although she heralds death, she wanted to let you see life. But being her child, you aren't either alive or dead. She said that you told her that you wanted to be away from the dead."
"So you stay away!" Morrigan screamed, pushing Raven back. "The voices get louder when you're near!" She looked at Rhodochrosite then as Raven stumbled back. "Is there anything that ANYONE can do to stop the voices? Is there?!"
The seeress sighed. "It won't be straightforward but you will have to focus your mind to block the voices out. I'd hoped that Data or Gabriel might have had something, but it seems not..."
"Does... my mother... love me still?"
"I cannot sense her due to her strong connection to the dead, but Raven assures me that she still loves you very much and only wants the best for her children."
As Morrigan grew used to her unique predicament, she found that she was no longer afraid of the voices of the dead. Now she collects souls, using her powers to manifest ethereal grasping hands that reach out to pluck the souls like fresh fruits, bringing them to Raven.
