He was a careful man. Strong, steady, patient. Measure twice, cut once.

The sort of man who had seen too much to be reckless, who never gave a straight answer when asked why he didn't speak, why he only smiled with his lips pressed tightly together in a tailor's seam.

He was a diligent worker, with a finesse for finding the perfect cuts, for taking the bread out at the exact moment it needed to, an eye for the sweetness of apples and ripe pears. He knew it all, a mixture of trial, error, experience, with a pinch of talent. A chef, a baker, a cook--a butcher. He could, and did, do it all.

He was his work, as much as a mother is her child, he too sunk into the years, reveling in the comfort of the mundane. He even shed a tear when someone bothered to teach him how to sign, how to speak with his wellworn hands. He loved the day in, day out, with all his heart and whatever was left of his soul.

But he never forgot. Never stopped cleaning his weapons, practicing his defense before dawn rose--he never let himself be fooled into complacency. He had his scars to thank for that, recounting each, each mistake and each bout of luck, until he would fall asleep.

Day by day, holding fast to the present--no matter how hard the fight.
