Biography

Kind and modest, an old romantic at heart. Hospitable, but dangerously cunning. The only one who has been able to dupe Cry- and for that, he's sure there's nothing good about him.

  • Lian has strong values of chivalry and etiquette, and a code of honour that he will not break under any circumstances. The only problem is that his code may not always align with what most dragons consider to be honourable. He is perfectly willing to lie and cheat if it gets him what he wants. Thankfully he’s not an inherently selfish person; he just likes his comforts and sometimes will use a little trickery and deceit to get his way. He’s fooled more than one merchant into selling him goods at less than half their actual value, and he’s charming and clever enough that only a few of them have actually caught on. (Cry has definitely caught on, but Lian considers it a fun game to try to trick the Tundra merchant again, regardless)
  • He is also an incredibly gracious host, sparing no expense when he has visitors and making sure they have access to every comfort. Some think it’s so he can show off his accumulated wealth, but Lian genuinely seems to enjoy taking care of his guests. However, if his guests are ungrateful or try to take advantage of his hospitality, Lian can get quite nasty, though his revenge is always so subtle that it’s impossible to pin anything on him.
  • Lian came to the clan with a decent amount of wealth to start with, but he has never really explained where it came from. His fondness for large, feathered hats, as well as his ability to navigate by the stars and habit of breaking into sea shanties have led most of the clan to believe he might have been a pirate once. Based on his rich tastes and clever wit, he was likely a very good pirate, perhaps even a pirate king. Whatever he was before, though, he insists that he’s retired now and just wants to live a quiet life enjoying good food and nice company
  • Lian has a bit of a flair for the dramatic, and is a huge fan of the grand gesture. If someone wants to do something big, such as a surprise party or a proposal, Lian is the one to call on for help. He will drop everything and throw all of his resources into making the plan work. On one occasion he learned how to play a Plainstrider’s Lute so that one of his hatchlings could woo a potential mate. On another, he helped pay for and fly a massive order of rose petals back to the lair so that Thistle could have a rare romantic dinner with Storm (said romantic dinner turned into a debate over magical theory, which made Lian pout a bit when he found out after, but at least they tried)
  • Lian has a collection of fancy quills he uses to write letters; and boy, does he write a lot of letters. He has penpals he writes to all over Sornieth, from the very tip of the Southern Icefield all the way up to the Worldedge Wetlands. Some of his letters go to his various children who have gone out to explore the world, but many others are from mysterious companions that none of the clan has ever met. Lian is happy to tell stories about his various penpals and the shenanigans that they all got up to when Lian was younger, and yet he never really seems to reveal much about himself or his past when he’s regaling others with his tales. Sometimes the letters he receives have trinkets attached, such as a few pretty feathers, or a string of colourful beads. Once he received what the clan was pretty sure was a dragon’s skull, but Lian just laughed like it was a private joke, and hid the skull away before anyone could get a good look. No one has seen it since and at this point they’ve collectively decided they don’t want to know.
