Alekain had another name when he was born, but when he was stolen away from his parents, he was too young to know it. He has only ever known himself as Alekain, king of wind and nature, forest ruler and deity.
Like many others raised in Leannan's Grove north of the Fletching Clan, Alekain was spirited away from his parents as a hatchling by Culoshelin, a well-meaning but misguided fey. When Arcane magic spilled into the already magical grove, every one of the dragons and fey there were warped--including Alekain.
Raised by Culoshelin, Alekain was taught that he deserved the world, let alone the Fletching Clan's territory. It was whispered in his fragile ears that his rightful place had been taken from him, that dragons with no fey magic about them lived in opulence while he and his court festered in the little space the bamboo grove afforded them. By the time he was an adult, the skydancer was sharp and vengeful, mind clouded with the fey-Arcane magic. His court consisted of many other stolen tree-like dragons and fey; his general, a monster named Kadrain, was more than willing to instigate the war that brought the Fletching Clan to its knees. Even now, Alekain has no idea how much blood was spilled in his name, but he does remember the bodies scattered on the floor of the opaline palace he inherited, and the itching dissatisfaction as he sat upon his usurped throne, however short that time lasted.
Once the curse of Arcane magic was broken at last, there was almost nothing left of Alekain. The betrayed skydancer survived only because his mate dragged him to safety--and for many days after, he lay in the overgrown grass, little but a shell. His mother had returned to her fey self, no sense of what she had done wrong, his children were dead, blood stained his paws. All this, and he was barely grown.
Eventually, Alekain felt well enough to weep for what had passed, and then Haliketra knew all would be well. The wise spiral nursed him back to health and the two, along with what was left of their friends, begged the Fletching Queen for forgiveness. The queen, grieving and broken, still forgave them, and at daybreak a pact was forged; the Tree Children would become the guardians of the Fletching Clan in exchange for rights to live in the territory and care for their own.
Though most Fletching dragons would never trust the Tree Children, most eventually accepted them, and Alekain was able to build his small kingdom on the shambles of the war. They all stay far from the fey grove where they were raised, and some have become powerful warriors and mages, defending the Fletching clan in the wake of the scarcity they caused.
