Background
Elvira had crawled out of her egg keening faintly, weakly dragging herself toward the other eggs. Her mother had stared at her in horror and dismay, realizing the the odds of her surviving as such a premature hatchling were extremely low. As a result, without even waiting to see what might happen, she gently picked up the small dragon, carried her into a tree, and set her down. At this time Elvira did not have a name, but she cried out after her mother as she left. Soon the older dragon was out of sight and could no longer hear her, so the hatchling cried, tears and saliva collecting into the beginnings of her first pearl. She could not climb down from the tree, much less fly, and so she remained up there for nearly a year, surviving on the tree itself and whatever insects happened her way. Her colors worked well to help camouflage her body in the foliage, allowing her to remain well-hidden from predators. When someone finally did find her, she was wary. It was a light green and pinkish snapper female. Little critters seemed to follow the snapper. Elvira remained to observe and get to know the snapper called Talia; it took a long time to coax her into their arms, even after helping Elvira down from the tree. Naturally, however, Talia eventually became the one Elvira trusted the most as she was brought back to the clan. Talia took note of Elvira's wings being much smaller than average. No matter how hard Elvira tried, she could barely get off the ground, let alone even hover in one spot. Elvira was discouraged, tears in her eyes as she saw other hatchlings flying from birth. Talia pulled the little pearlcatcher close, letting Elvira lean into her. "I....I'm a failure." Elvira sobbed. Talia just smiled. "Nonsense, child. You're as strong as any hatchling in your own way. You do not need to fly to live life." Sniffling, Elvira looked up at the kind snapper. "But what if......what if I never fly?" She turned her head to glance at her wings, slowly flapping them. Various critters gathered around them as they often did with Talia around. The snapper slowly leaned down and nuzzled the hatchling. "Maybe you will someday or maybe you won't. That does not define who you are at your core. My kind never have been able to fly, but we still remain strong as any mountain. Flying or no flying, I will be here to guide you, little one." Such kind words made Elvira smile. Her small arms hugged Talia, feeling comforted that she was loved no matter what. |
