Frost Flies
_____Frost flies are strange little magical creatures with short lifespans. They live and breed in area with available magic to feed on, and venture out as adults to find mates. Their breeding rituals are intricate and surprisingly beautiful for what essentially amounts to a magic bug. Frost flies will go out and find a surface to etch in the winter season, usually a frost covered surface. They draw a remarkable geometric looping pattern on it, and this art signals their vigor and strength to any potential mates.
_____Dragons have found a way to entice the little bugs to etch their scales. Frost flies prefer Iridescent and Shimmering scale types, and carve off the top few layers of the scale, causing the dragon no harm. The etched surface reveals its underlying color with the iridescence removed, resulting in a matte finished design.
_____Frost fly keepers "leak" magical energy for the flies to feed on, and keep small swarms around them. Patrons come in for etching services and it does the bugs no harm to draw on a willing surface, even if that surface does get up and leaves afterwards. Their keeper makes sure they're healthy and have all they need.
