It was evening before anyone noticed he hadn’t come out yet, that had to be a new record. Nonetheless, a shadow fell across the ground of his little hideaway, the muted outline of the clan’s matriarch. Lauli flicked his tail, not bothering to look up. “Do you actually need something, or are you just here to tell me how worried you are about me?” he snapped. It came out a bit harsh in hindsight, but he hated being interrupted and there wasn’t much sunlight left. “That’s exactly why I’m her, Li,” Shatter said as she came in and lay beside him, “or, rather, how worried your mother is.” This finally got him to look over. “That’s a lie and you know it, and you know I know you know it.” Against his better judgement, a smile crept up at the corners of his mouth. Shatter, far less reserved, just straight up laughed. “Alright, maybe she isn’t the most worried. But my point stands, you can’t spend your whole life on your own.” “But I’m not alone!” “A magic book is not suitable company for a dragon-” she hesitated at his foul change of mood, “and you know exactly where I’m going with this.” He nodded slightly. “I can’t let you go. We need you here, and that means we need you to at least try to find someone. Hypatia is your age, she’s kind, and fun-” “And dumb as a dead mouse.” Shatter grunted. “That’s far from appropriate.” “It’s far from appropriate that I’m the one hatchling who wanted to leave, but the only one you didn’t send away!” He scrambled to his feet, tail lashing. “I don’t belong here!” Shatter watched him run out, book flapping madly behind him, and shook her head.
