Rumours are a tricky thing, are they not? There's as much falsehood to be found in rumours as there is truth; words that fall from the tongue of a gossip are unreliable and often twisted, malformed transformations of a smidgen of truth that has long since lost its way. You should always express caution when little birds tell you things, because little birds can lie as easily as anyone else, for they have a will of their own.

There are many rumours that surround Razi, the matriarch of the Clan of the Citrine Vein. A thousand versions of the same tale, spread through crossroad gossip and hatchling games. Some would tell you that she was healed by the vein and is now connected to it; others that she was born of it, or even that she is, in some way, an extension of it. It's her crystalline fur that begun it all, she says; it shimmers the same colours as the citrine vein that runs through her territories and people made... assumptions, she says.

"Rumours have a life of their own," she'll reply with a smile on her face, whenever someone asks. "Let the hatchlings believe in their fairytales, but don't be swayed by them."

But just as rumours cannot always be trusted, neither can those who refute them. For those who are at the heart of rumours have their own motivations and secrets to keep.

Only those closest to her know the truth of Razi's origins; know that the rumours are more than simply lies and fantastical tales; know that each version of the story holds a mote of truth but never the whole picture.

The first thing Razi remembers is the colour yellow. The second is awakening in a cluster of citrine crystal, growing out from the freshly exposed vein that stretched out across the land that became her home. As she stood on shaky, unfamiliar limbs, she heard crystal crack and pop, her fur detaching from the nest-like formation from which she clambered. The territory was empty and unclaimed, the vein untapped and pristine.

At first, she found she could not stray beyond the edges of the vein. Her limbs would weaken, her resolve crumble. With time, she was able to push further, to extend her limits; she grew and, as she did, so did her strength. Soon, she could go almost anywhere she liked, travelling just because she could—and, once, straying across the border into the swampy edges of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, but that's another story altogether. She met friends, allies, and people in need, until one day... she was injured.

Upon her urging, her closest allies returned her to the vein as soon as possible, as her strength began to fade. Only upon returning to the cluster in which she had first awoken did her wounds heal, crystal stitching back together. Those allies are some of the few who, to this day, know the story of her first days, their questions and shock only stated by the truth.

The Clan of the Citrine vein was born that day. Around the vein of yellow, a home was built; atop Razi's crystal nest, her own sanctum. The clan grew and grew and the rumours sparked and spread, but Razi has become accustom to bending and denying the truth in the same breath.

For, as much as the vein has given her life, it can also take it away.
