 ZACHARIAH SAWYER FIRST MATE OF THE ARMED FREIGHTER 'MANTARUNE' TRUE HEIR TO HAVEN «- - - - - - - - - - - - - ❖ - - - - - - - - - - - - -» He flees the only home he's ever known with blood in his eyes. His name is Zachariah Sawyer, the first son of Mortimer Sawyer, and technically speaking the frighteningly religious town of Haven should belong to him. But it doesn't, and it never will. He is running away because he knows his younger brother is going to be killed, and he cannot stand by and watch. He will never be preacher, because where his brother's mutations run strong, he has nothing. He's powerless, and so, he runs. He's not exactly in the best place mentally. He's an absolute livewire of fury and self-sabotage, unable to interact with anyone without swiftly exploding in on himself and them. For a time he makes a run of it anyway, working as a smuggler moving anything he can get his hands on. At first he moves goods, but then he starts to move people: across war zones, moves the displaced. When he does, he doesn't think of it as a 'good' deed so much as something that makes him some money. After all, all he's doing is drifting. Ironically, it's not someone who takes offence to this that almost kills him, but a regular bar fight in the wrong town. He founds himself bleeding in the sands when a stranger takes him in. And that's how he joins the armed freighter Mantarune. He loses his legs from the fight- his new captain, Waveshrike, builds replacements powered by steam. He's actually more bereft by the fact that, in the aftermath, his bloodline's mutation finally awakens- an exoskeleton which sits over his skin, hard as bone and red as blood. It's like a joke, and it's what finally lets him move on from all of his resentment. Well, most of it. He remains a pretty abrasive guy, but shockingly funny too. Whilst quick to anger, he's also quick to calm down. Expanding his horizons has allowed him to breathe for the first time in his life, and there's a glimmer of hope in his dark red eyes these days.
