Biography

KATARO
The disgraced jailer.
Icicle Chains Winter Cape Ferocious Claws Darkened Eye Scar Silver Steampunk Goggles
The klazobells chimed their terrible song all throughout the halls of the great prison, the earsplitting screeches rebounding off the iced steel walls and filling the skulls of all residents of the prison. Guards burst forth from hidden passages and offices, securing exits and corraling inmates while they held onto their weapons.

Small steel owls that lined the walls suddenly opened their eyes and beaks, the shrill voice of a guard coming from them and adding to the devilish chorus. "Escaped inmate from Level 5! Escaped inmate from Level 5! I repeat: we have an escaped inmate from Level 5!"

All the while, within a brightly lit control centre the room was deathly silent save for the tense breaths of the overseer of the prison and her employees. The guards milled around exchanging only glances, not daring to even whisper under their breath, for so palpable and suffocating was her rage that none could bear to break it.

The one thing that dared to break the silence was the opening and closing of the control room's doors and the oncoming thud of boots on the steel floor. Walking with the grace of someone on their way to their last rites, Kataro stopped before her superior's seat, her cloaked silhouette breaking up the screen of surveillance owls.

She gazed up at her leader, unflinching and expressionless. Yet she said nothing, for what was there that she could say that would ever suffice as an apology?

The Lord Protector gazed down at her protégé, and the only visible signs of her fury were the indentations she was making in the handrest of her chair and the blazing emotion in her eyes. Any lesser being would have crumpled beneath the weight of her stare, but Kataro was not made the Lord Protector's right hand for no reason. So she stood and stared, waiting for the punishment she was due.

Then, without any warning-

-the savage silver of her gauntlets flashed across Kataro's face and all she could remember was red and searing pain and that white-hot piercing gaze full of fury and disappointment and regret and sadness-

-before her world went to black.

----

Kataro woke with a sharp breath. Her cybernetics instantly adjusted to the darkness of her room, and she realised her skull ached and her heart racing like a snow streak in flight. Hands clenching and unclenching, she worked her muscles through the trauma of the memory seared across her face, controlling her breath until she felt the shadows leave her body and she leaned back against the rickety bed.

She glanced at the window to see orange light peeking through the curtains. Her nightmare, as awful as it was, had given her the start she needed to continue hunting down her fugitive.

Swinging her legs out of bed, she briefly touched the edge of her artificial eyes. The last parting gift and a wordless apology from her mentor: a set of eyes custom fit for her and made to withstand the brutal cold of her home. Her former home, she thought with a deep pang in her chest.

Her purpose in life now was simple: find the prisoner that took her eyes and dignity and then pass judgement with her own hands. Yet this journey had continued for years, and she felt no closer to the goal every day than when she had started out.

But recent stirrings in the wind had her hopeful. She kept the hope close to her chest, but she dared not extinguish it entirely, for fed her hate, her sadness, her desperation - it was her purpose and driving force.

She rose to meet the day with a renewed vigour. Soon her hunt would be ended, and though it would never earn her eyes back, the redemption for her mistake would be reward enough.
