"What can call to me louder than the sea, I wonder?"

Barnabas tried to remember where it all started. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, because it had began when he was so very little. In fact, it had all really started when he was still growing in his egg, soaking up all the element-rich magic in the air from the safe confines of his shell.

When Barnabas’ had reunited at long last with his estranged sister Anahera, questioning his sea-blue eyes was the first thing she did.

“You’re from Water?” she’d asked, brow furrowing questioningly. “How did this happen?”

Barnabas, who had drawn close to her to truly get a good look at his sister, had to take a step back. “Well,” he’d begun, trying to piece the story together. “It was, as I imagine, a quick thing.”

There was no doubt that, between the two of them, Barnabas was the odd one. He was the one who had grown up without his parents, without his family, and without a set home. It was strange to think he could have been born in Light, if the world hadn’t turned a little sideways when he was an egg.

It started, he thinks, with a trip across the Sea. Barnabas had to do much digging to figure out his origins, and the general consensus is that a ship had sailed from the Wasteland down south, and in doing so passed by a twister that had strayed a little too far from home and across the Tidelord’s domain as they passed the Windswept Plateau. This pseudo storm had jarred the ship from its course, had shaken up its passengers, and separated a still-forming clutch of eggs from their mother.

All of the eggs had been returned, except for one. The parents had grieved the loss, and with this tragedy the ship had foregone the scenic route in favour of cutting right across the Sea and back towards home, the Sunbeam Ruins.

Anahera had gasped when she heard this. “How did your egg possibly survive?” she had asked him, folding her arms across her chest and watching him with great interest. “Only Water eggs can survive dropping into the Sea, surely?”

“More or less. There are other ways, of course.”

It was really just plain luck, or perhaps a last remnant of divine intervention from the absent Tidelord. Instead of sinking into the abyss and being swallowed by its murky dark, Barnabas’ egg had instead drifted plainly down before settling into the reaching glow of a passing guardian.

Their name had been Klaus, and they were a pioneer of sea trade. Their methods were a bit…on the line when it came to what was entirely legal, and this alone had been a precedent for how Barnabas would later conduct his own trade.

Klaus had only been passing by, and had certainly not had any plans of procuring an egg out of seemingly nowhere. But no matter how much they looked, they simply could not find any parents searching for an egg. It was growing late, and the Sea was getting dark, so Klaus had simply given up and taken the egg back to their home: a large vessel drifting across the water as its crew waited for another job.

It was certainly a strange family to have been placed alongside, but Barnabas had considered himself fortunate to have found anyone at all.

“Even with the Tidelord gone, it seems his children still watch over the Sea diligently.” Barnabas had leaned against a nearby table, weary from his search and from his story and from the weight of so long of belonging to no one. “But now I am here, a Water dragon in the Icewarden’s domain with my Light-eyed sister.” He smiled. “Isn’t that grand?”
