Miles is a thread-mage. He makes spells by twisting, weaving, and tugging the thin threads that wild magic tends to form by nature; these threads are invisible and intangible to most, but his apparel lets him see and touch wild magic as he pleases.
He is able to weave magic threads on his own, of course, but on a vastly inferior level than what he is able to do with the help of his jewelry. In his words, it's like "trying to walk with just one hind leg and one front leg: with enough practice it would be possible, but keeping it up will be a waste of energy and concentration, and honestly, really unpractical".
His abilities also let him see and interact with the much thicker and stronger ley lines that connect the most magic-dense places in Sornieth and, on an even larger scale, keep the stars and planets in place.
If he weaves and tugs enough magic threads, Miles can hang onto them and 'hitch a ride' to someplace else. To everyone else this just looks like teleportation, but Miles will fight it up and down, saying how different it is to teleportation magic, and "how dare you to generalize my artful skills in such a minimalistic way. Rude."
