Swindler and Cheat The only thing Abel is ever interested are the riches in other dragons' pockets. Born to a weak and poor clan, Abel was raised with nothing and told he would be nothing. He didn't know any different, couldn't have known isolated in a small community. One day when Abel was no longer so young he couldn't understand these things, a strange dragon entered their lair and began whispering to the older dragons. She told them all kinds of tall tales and rumors, lies and distortions, riling up those she could and discrediting the others. Despite the clan having nothing, she destroyed them from the inside out, causing infighting and looting and murder. She gathered the dragons she'd convinced to join her cause, ransacked any remaining resources, and left. Abel joined her, old enough to understand, but too young to know better. His family told him he was a fool before they were overcome. For several years, Abel ran with the dissenters for years, pillaging small, poor clans for resources and members as his had been pillaged. He grew older and wiser, climbed the ranks until he was second in command, and still he did not know what drove her, only that he wanted what she wanted, whatever that might have been. To him, it seemed she wanted the destruction of the small clans, regardless of their status, and in their destruction, she grew stronger, raised up an army. There were many things Abel learned from his time in that group, the least of which was that charm and the right words at the right time could get him anything he wanted. He began wiling dragons to get more power and riches, imitating the leader of the dissenters in how she convinced dragons to join her nonspecific cause. He got very good at tricking dragons, nearly as good as his master. It wasn't until he discovered her true reasons that he decided it was time to leave her reign. She once lived in a small, poor clan that ostracized her for her beliefs and was simply getting some kind of revenge. She was not pleased when he told her he was leaving, and in fact the last lesson she ever taught him was never to tell anyone you were leaving, but to go like a thief in the night. They nearly killed him before he escaped, a blow to his forehead leaving a starburst scar below his horns that he covers with soot to hide. His parents did not give him the name Abel, it was a name he took himself after leaving behind the dissenters. Now he spends his days collecting and spending wealth. More often than not, he is broke because he does not know any sense when it comes to keeping or investing wealth. He currently pays most of what he finds to rent a space in this lair, unaware that most of the dragons present do not pay rent but simply live as residents. |
