Biography

APPEARANCES can be deceiving. It's an old cliche -- a tired one, even, especially out here in the Wasteland where "usual" is a word with as many definitions as there are people -- but it's one by which Scienter lives her life. Children are small, innocent, and easy to overlook. Scienter wishes to be all of those things. In her previous life, she'd been an accomplished thaumatological researcher of the Isles, studying applied transmutative science at the base of the Observatory itself. She'd reached the pinnacle of her field and was not content to simply roost there. Talk of what goes on in the Observatory was always a favourite subject among her peers, but Scienter was not satisfied with mere speculation and rumour: she wanted to know. She found out. It was bad enough to trespass in the Observatory; blasphemy, even. Dragons are not meant to look at the gods before their time. Worse still, Scienter stole a tome. The runic inscriptions were impossible for her eyes to decipher, but her mind understood what she was reading just fine. The knowledge drove her from the Isles in terror. She booked passage with a Mezair centaur band. She didn't care where they were going, only that they were going away from the Isles. Distance didn't help, and neither did any of the other myriad methods of meditation or self-restoration that she came across in the following weeks, months, years. She worked her way through every method of forgetting she could find, until she was left with only one: a scroll to turn back the clock and make her young again. Unfortunately, in her haste to escape the confines of herself, Scienter misunderstood youth to mean innocence. | xxxxxxxxxx |
IMPRESSIONS
If you're thaumatologically sensitive, you will see a thing which should not be, surrounded by an aura cracked like a shell. Magic flakes off from the cracks, drifting aimlessly before flickering out of existence. The dark spaces in her eyes seem limitless, look less like a quirk of pigment and more like an invasion from within, as if the rose quartz of her iris is being systematically hunted and devoured. To everyone else, she's merely a precocious child who may perhaps one day need glasses.

RELATIONSHIPS
KITTY does not wholly trust Scienter, although he permits her to sleep in the Creche and live as other hatchlings do. He keeps an eye on her, especially when she seems to grow too close to any of the other youngsters. Scienter repays his diligence by keeping out of trouble, and scaring off things which might otherwise bring harm to the Creche's more regular inhabitants.PATRASK thinks the world of Scienter. Isn't she just adorable? He always has a toffee ready for her when he returns from Cloetta's shop. He never remembers how long she's actually been in the Creche. Scienter makes sure to never remind him. GILLIFLOWER taught Scienter how to sing, which is how she accidentally gave the Creche nightmares for a few weeks. Scienter does not sing anymore, though she will listen with rapt attention when Gilly sings for her during those field trips to the Orchard. Gilly knows exactly how old Scienter is, and he does not mind one bit. |
