Cardin is an old dragon, but a recently bloomed (hehe) Drichen. His Affixed plant was a potted cypress tree, which had some...unintended side effects. On the other hand, he has even more built-in armor plating than your average guardian.

Having been born in plague (and old already when he joined the Guardians), no one expected Cardin to be so completely Affixed to a plant. And, being vain, the change in his appearance was hard for him to accept. He sees it as more of a mutation than a gift, and has doubled down on his protectiveness of his ward, Shineclaw (though honestly it would be hard to find a dragon who needs less protecting than Cardin's massive mate) since he sees that as the only benefit of his cypress partnership
