Biography
“Thank you,” Nanette said. She walked along silently for a minute after that, kicking the errant leaf swept into her path and glancing this way and that as she crossed another street. Then, she remembered something from earlier in the day. “What were you working on earlier?” she asked. “When I came home?”
“Oh!” Thomas’s voice brightened considerably as the conversation turned to his favorite hobby. “It’s a dress commission. Nothing too unusual, but I’ve gotten to use some different fabrics that I’m used to. It’s an interesting challenge.” Thomas continued on, enthusiastically listing measurements and describing aspects of the outfit he was designing.
Nanette smiled. Since they were young, Thomas had always had been fascinated by clothing design. She remembered being about five years old and receiving a doll from a popular toy line for her birthday. She had been perfectly happy with the drab orange crop top and plain green skirt the doll had come with, but her very best friend had seemed less than pleased with the toy’s attire. Within the week, her doll had gotten an entirely new wardrobe, compliments of Thomas Fazzari. She distinctly recalled all the other girls at school being quite jealous, but she’d refused to reveal the identity of her fashion designer. That secret had been hers and Thomas’s alone.
As the years went on, Thomas’s skills grew, to the point where even bringing up those first few designs seemed to embarrass him. As with most artists, his early work was not exactly something he was eager to show off or remember. Nanette was sure, though, that she still had those little outfits somewhere, even if the doll that had once worn them was lost to time and memory. She could never bear to get rid of them. No matter how many faults Thomas pointed out, she still remembered the sense of wonder she’d felt when he’d presented them to her. She was sure, then, that her best friend possessed some sort of magic.
