It was intended as a prank. Magdala was practicing scrying over distances and spotted an imperial hatchling getting water from a spring. When he wasn't looking, she cast an illusion on herself to imitate his coloring and then projected her image over his reflection with some mirror magic. Then she waited for him to notice.

She was afraid he'd walk away, but suddenly he looked straight at her and started talking. Immediately she mimicked talking as well. Her scrying magic wasn't the greatest though, so she couldn't make out what he was saying. She kept it up until he left - it was tiring using magic for an hour straight, but the experience was also really fun.

The next day she enchanted her scrying mirror to permanently peer out from the waterfall. The image was poor due to the moving water, but all she needed was a lookout to see the imp coming.

In her silver bowl she poured water from the very spring she scried, gathered by her that morning. By using the same water, she would able to use her magic longer with less strain. Then she waited.

She spotted him in her mirror around the same time she saw him the previous day. Quickly she wrapped herself in the color illusion and prepared to project her image as soon as he got to the water's edge.

Everyday she practiced and improved her art, but the color illusion was still very tiring. She tried pre-enchanting rings with the spell, but the gems she could afford only had a capacity for a couple hours. If the interaction went on longer than that, she'd have to quickly cast the spell anyways.

Trying to slip on a second ring had too much of a delay and her actual colors would be visible for at least twenty seconds. Pendants were about the same. Then she decided to try enchanting a relic left in her parents' belongings - a scatterscroll. The item was rumored to be capable of completely changing a dragons colors, but was uncontrollable. She figured if the scroll had enough magic to do that, it should have enough magic to trigger her illusion spell instead.

She went to work removing the writing in certain places of the scroll's original spell and replacing it with her own. It may have been considered a special relic, but, like any written spell, the magic was stored in the paper. The words just told the magic what to do when it was released.

Magdala wasn't sure how many charges her new spell would have, but it was amazing to have no magical strain when interacting with the Imperial. She was even able to hone her scrying so she could catch a couple words.

"...spring... glade... "

Not very helpful words, but it was still an exciting development. After the Imperial left, Magdala went about the rest of her day, noticing her appearance hadn't changed back.

In the morning she still had the imperial's coloring. Mentally shrugging, she did chores while waiting for the imperial to show up.

He never returned.

Now Magdala was more than just irritated cause she was stood up - she still looked like that jerk too. In frustration she burned the scroll to undo the illusion, but the amount of magic still stored in the scroll was too much to naturally dissipate and it violently rebounded.

When Magdala came to, the first thing she noticed was her forearm was still white. She looked around the now messy hut - her scrying bowl was dented, and no trace of the scroll remained.

She thankfully found her mirror in one piece, so Magdala set it up to keep watch for the imperial.
