The tiny hatchling slept peacefully in her den, snoring softly. Every so often one of her legs would twitch, and her eyes fluttered beneath their lids. She was dreaming…

In her dream the little Bogsneak was lost, wandering aimlessly through a wood thick with ancient trees. She wasn’t scared, and there was no sense of urgency to her movements, but a dark cloud of inevitable doom seemed to hang over the forest. Although she had no idea where she was going, the Bogsneak felt compelled to keep walking. Some small force was gently pulling her forward…

At first the forest had been silent, but as the hatchling tread lightly on the moss carpeting the forest floor, she heard the beginnings of a quiet song filter through the tree trunks surrounding her. Eventually, she began to make out the words:

Can you hear me calling, child,
can you hear my song?
Have you walked for long, dear child,
have you done no wrong?

I can see your soul, O young one,
flickering so bright
Listen to my voice, come closer,
dream with all your might

It won’t take too much longer, hatchling,
‘till you meet me here
Come to me with pure thoughts only,
bring not any fear…

At this point in the song, the unsuspecting hatchling had reached the edge of the wood and was standing in a large clearing. The moon shone bright, illuminating the clearing fully, while millions of stars glimmered passively overhead. The song was coming from a large shape moving through the night sky, as if it were a part of it. The creature moved in lazy circles over the clearing, making a slow descent until, with its final verse, an enormous, serpentine dragon landed in the center of the clearing, eyes fixed on its prey.

I’ve hungered for so long, my darling,
flesh an empty hull
Fill my maw with dreams and wonders
Let me eat your soul
