What had she ever done to deserve this fate?

The thought repeated itself over and over in Selene’s mind the day she had been abandoned by the ones she trusted the most. Her family. How could her family--?

Selene knew why. She knew the reason well. The little Imperial knew that she was cursed, and who wouldn’t be afraid of that? Familial ties mean nothing in the face of fear, after all.

Hatching on the day of All Hallow’s Eve and Samhain was bad enough already. It was considered bad luck to hatch on the day dark magic is the strongest. In fact, the day of All Hallow’s Eve is the most feared of the year. Dragons in every flight, even Shadow, would leave offerings out, afraid of the things that go bump in the night.

But being born on that day does not mean instant banishment. Persecution, maybe, though it is not a serious offense.

The dealbreaker for Selene was her brightly glowing eyes.

Too bright to be natural. Glowing like twin suns where her eyes should be, her family had gasped in horror upon witnessing such an… abomination. Still, they were family, and it wouldn’t deter them from tolerating her at least.

Growing up, Selene was never well-liked. Well-liked is quite the word, more like… feared. And fear leads to violence and discrimination. The other hatchlings would pick on her. Sometimes it was just insults and teasing, but sometimes it would get to the point of physical violence. Selene would always just quiver in fear, never fighting back.

It was a hard life, but it was a life. At the very least, Selene had her family, even though she knew they would shoot looks of disgust at her behind her back. No, that was of no matter. Selene, even though her life was miserable, was… happy enough. She had her family, and there were some dragons that would at least make an effort to try and stop the persecution. Of course, that was before they learned of her cursed nature.

Then she woke up in a forest, all alone with no recollection of how she ever got there.

It was dark, shadowy and things peered at her from behind the trees. Selene could feel their eyes on her. In her mind, she knew how she got there. She didn’t want to believe it. Her family, perhaps not as loving as they should have been, were still there for her. Then all of a sudden, they did… this? What could have prompted this?

With nothing else to do, Selene started to walk. It was nighttime and it was cold. If she could find some shelter, she’d be safe from the frigid wind and the things that wake in the night. After a couple of hours and some close calls with predators in the forest, Selene stumbled upon a cave. It was nestled within the side of a mountain, a bit shabby but better than nothing. It would be her home for the next year, even if it felt like ten.

When the clan stumbled across Selene, she was half-dead. The wilderness had not been kind to her. She was immediately rushed back to the clan grounds and administered medical treatment. After her recovery, Selene was given two options; stay in the clan, or return back to the forest. Predictably, she chose the former.

It was difficult for the young Imperial to settle within the clan. Having lived in the forest for so long, being around other dragons was such a strange concept. Still, even if it took time, eventually she became one of the clan. They didn’t judge her for the blinding lights that were her eyes, nor did they question the fact that she was born on a day that signified misfortune. No, as long as Selene was amicable, they enjoyed her company.

Since she was young, she was adopted by two very generous Wildclaws; the clan leaders Cecil and Nala. They raised Selene as her own, giving her the proper childhood she had never been given within her birthclan. Oh, how happy she was! The clan seemed so perfect. She even met her best friend, Cumulus, who shared many similar interests and delighted in being with her. They both bonded over the peculiarity of their eyes; Selene had the sun in her eyes, while Cumulus the wind.

Selene is content living the life she missed out on. It seems as if that won’t change, that she’ll continue living in bliss. And maybe she will, who knows? Maybe Selene can be forever young, living her days warm and sated. That would make her oh, so happy. But Selene can’t tell the future. If she could, then maybe she would have left behind those that had been cruel to her in the past. If she could, maybe she would leave behind those that will be cruel to her in the future.
