Queen of the Underworld
Harbinger of Doom

“Decline is also a form of voluptuousness, just like growth. Autumn is just as sensual as springtime. There is as much greatness in dying as in procreation.”
― Iwan Goll

“In order to induce the process of decay, water is necessary.”
― Natsuo Kirino

From the moment of her hatching, Kalma knew her fate. She was the Queen of the Underworld. Asserting dominance over her brother was easy; resisting the urge to murder her parents was not. She grew stronger off the blood of other dragons - some hatchlings who had been exalted to a deity known as the Plaguebringer. Most of those who lived feared her. Those who didn't fear her were infatuated with her - or too stupid to sense the power rising within her blood. She collected these poor souls like lost puppies, their original names forgotten as she dubbed each one Surma - 'dog'.

As she approached maturity, she slipped away from her lair into the crisp night. A few of her most loyal and trustworthy Surma came along for protection. Her explorations led them to a terrain of craters - mostly a land of stone, but each little crater was like its own little swampy ecosystem. Some bubbled, some steamed, some released a noxious stench. Each was filled with a clan of dragons born of or sworn to the plague flight. Silly creatures - living a life of servitude to a false goddess.

She eventually came to a smaller, distant crater that was seemingly empty. Kalma and her dogs entered the crater to investigate. Some time later, she realized the crater continued eternally - without realizing it, they'd become lost in a long, dark tunnel. They pushed on. Through the bone-chilling night, through the fatigue and gut-gnawing hunter, they persisted.

Eventually, the tunnel did come to an end - in a water just as dark and cold as the tunnel had been. She had entered a new land, one filled with water rather than death and decay. It smelled of sand and sea; wishes and dreams. It was foreign, even uncomfortable, at first, yet Kalma soon discovered there were signs of death if she was willing to look hard enough.

Corpses of fish floated on the rippling surface of the seas. Bones settled, left behind by scavengers, sank into the sands. Down in the murky depths, fossils - remnants of lives once lived - could be found if she dug them out between tangles of seaweed. A sickly runt a few days older than herself, left for dead, was added to her collection of 'dogs'. Perhaps she should have offered him a swift death - but why kill something that could be so useful to her later?

This new land became her home. She would never swear allegiance to the deity these new dragons worshiped - after all, she hadn't even accepted her own. Instead, she set up her home in a tunnel deep beneath the surface, reachable only by traveling through water. She left this tunnel so rarely that most dragons today believe she was but a myth. Some, however, are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her soaring through the night, tattered blood-red wings a mere wisp against the stars. It is rumored that she only leaves her dominion on the nights she mates with one of her Surma.

Kalma was born with the ability to manipulate others of a similar age. It never quite worked on adults (at least not to the same degree), but allowed her to bring other hatchlings under her influence. This power faded with age and is all but nonexistent since she's severed connections with her homeland and the plague flight. Much as she doesn't adhere to deity worship of any form, it's likely this was an ability tied closely to the Plaguebringer herself.

Place she lives is called Traveler's Tomb? Tomb of Tides?

Disappearances?!
Some eggs have been disappearing from nests recently. Some say Kalma is to blame. After all, her Surma present her with eggs as tokens of respect. It seems Kalma often bestows her affections upon whichever of her Surma presents her with the most eggs. Maybe they're not just bringing fish, frog, and otherwise foul eggs anymore...
