PERSONALITY + BACKGROUND

They named me Cosmos for their greatest love. They never asked whether it was mine.

I was born on a night of no consequence. It was not a festival, nor a particularly auspicious date. The earth did not quake, the sun did not vanish, the thunder did not roll. I was simply born, never destined to be special. I chose to be special.

My parents had their faces ever turned towards the sky, watching the distant, unfathomable light of the stars, observing the planets in their celestial dance. These things did not interest me. Instead, even as a hatchling, I concerned myself with things of the earth. The scarred, twisted landscape of the Abiding Boneyard always fascinated me, seeming to call to me, clutch at me, inviting me home. Eventually, I followed.

I set out in the middle of the day, slipping away from my clanmates who were all asleep, waiting for twilight, waiting for what little light ever reached our home to leave. I had no wish to wait for such a thing and ventured out to meet my fate with a faded woven blanket and some food. I traveled for days, making my way through the thick bramble at the heart of my erstwhile homeland, through the Forum with its crumbling pillars and soiled, ruined pool, journeyed until I reached the edge of the Plague domain.

It was better than I had ever imagined, ever been able to conceive of while hidden within my old clan’s thicket of bramble and thorn, hidden from the sun. Here the sun shone, bright and cruel and pitiless. The place was a wasteland, ravaged by famine, disease, and drought. It was perfect. Here I could be anything, I could be more than “little Cosmos,” my life could be more than my parents’ legacy. I could do anything.

I set out to prove myself great, to prove myself worthy of this new land which I so desired to be part of. I set out across the great wasteland, making my way through peril and plague to the Wyrmwound, that great pustulant scar upon the surface of Sornieth. I made my way to the Wyrmwound and I prayed.

There at the side of the bubbling pestilential cauldron, I fell to my knees and prayed to the Plaguebringer, asking for her blessing, asking to be accepted among her children despite my birth to stargazers within the Tangled Wood. This was where I belonged, I knew it, and I would stay until my prayers were answered.

The Plaguebringer did not come to me that day, nor the next or the next. She did not come for thirteen days, and I was starving, weak, and deeply ill. Spending so long beside the great pit had given me all sorts of plague, but I bore each one as bravely as I was able, seeing them as tests. Perhaps if I could survive this, the Plaguebringer would see in me the strength he so greatly prized. And she did.

On the evening of my fourteenth day beside the Wyrmwound, she came. She spoke to me not as a mother would, but as a survivor would. She praised my drive, my ambition, my strength. She said that I had passed her tests, and I would go with her blessing. She said I was home.

I woke the next morning a short distance away from the Wyrmwound, head swimming with starvation and illness. I smiled and set out in search of a clan.

As I fought my way once more through the Abiding Boneyard, I thought long and hard about what kind of clan I would make my new home among. But in the end, it did not matter. A scout found me at the edge of her clan’s territory and led me to their camp. Immediately, I knew this was where I belonged. They accepted me, taking the scars on my hide as proof of the Plaguebringer’s blessing, and here I have stayed ever since.

I fought for my place in this land. I belong here. Do you?
