Biography
Lonely little gravedigger, scratching shallow holes into the wastelands. The frontier called her name, alluring, and she accepted.
Time ceased its pull. The sun stood still. She dug her graves, ten for the cowboys and one for the sheriff and two for the town doctor and his impostor. The impostor took three burials before it fell into peace. By then the water had turned sickly, and she began drinking from the cacti when thirst struck. Most others drank the water.
Business swelled. She built herself a cabin in the dead yard, surrounded by examples of her fine work. And customers came. They came shyly at first, seeking solace from the one person who could help them at this late stage, and she provided the world to them. A few trinkets got you an hour of your worries soothed. They came with beastly hands spilling from their eye sockets, the eyes migrated to the stomach by then and mushroom gills flourishing where the scales had fallen away. She listened with a glass of cactus wine.
They begged, of course. Could she unbury the dead, to confuse them into life? How many burials were provided per person? Can my grave be dug in the shape of my family's sigil? The requests were peculiar at times, and many had odd ideas of grave etiquette. "That's not a concern, hun," she breathed. "It's not a question of if you can return. I just need to know how many times."
The fatal day came when the eternal sun faltered. Customers faded before her eyes. She packed her shovel and, without a backwards glance to the still town, moved on. There would always be someone waiting to die.
