Aspen had a strong affinity for elemental magic and insight that manifested on her as her many eyes. While she wasn't formally royalty, this magical affinity ran in her bloodline and she was well aware of other family members, of all sorts of elemental allegiances, that shared physical anomalies like hers.

Eyes like earth's precious gems, or proud symbols of fire... her family never quite settled into any one territory, and ultimately Aspen clung to her mother, Luka, as her one source of stability when her father and multiple siblings went their different paths.

Luka and Aspen settled in the outskirts of the Shifting Expanse bordering the Light territories after her remaining sister left for a clan there. Luka joined an elite society in the area, the Starstudy Courts, and quickly ascended the ranks on account of her incredible control of elemental magic, which easily supported the pair of them with the massive wages of directorial work.

Feeling more and more pressured to match the magical abilities of her mother, Aspen sought out training. However, her significantly more unruly personality and Luka's stringent teaching methods were, simply put, incompatible.

Aspen was instead drawn to the more chaotic energies of a local skyship clan that she came to know as the Pearl-Robbers. While she did not entirely agree with the values of the clan leadership, Aspen found some of the members much milder. With the help of some accommodating folks for family and Strife, the only Earth dragon in the clan, Aspen was able to harness her powers more constructively, and even do things her teacher couldn't.

Sometimes, gold filigree would erupt from her many gazes.

Eventually, the typically-dismissive clan leader took notice of Aspen's powers, an extended an offer for her stay that Aspen, with her powers of insight, wasn't sure she could turn down fully. Wishing to return home, she instead offered some of her magical services as payment for her long stay with the pirates.

Aspen ran away from the Pearl-Robbers after dabbling in things she shouldn't have.

She stole one of the Pearl-Robbers smaller skyships, wandering until crashing upon the shores of a strange territory, not drawn in many maps. The territory of Queen Calamity.

They happened to be celebrating a victory with a large banquet and, hungry and tired, Aspen thought she could sneak in amongst Cala's army in its festive and chaotic state.

Sneaking didn't work so well. Aspen ended up catching the Queen's eye... though it seems it was because of her good looks.
