Biography

LORE
Some are born great, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Others try their hardest to run, so that greatness may never find them. From the moment he was born, Ciero was expected to grow up and bear the mantle his parents would pass down to him, take the greatness he was given and put forth his own effort into making something even better. This, to him, seemed utterly pointless. After defying his parents for years, and ensuring his position as a family disappointment, Ciero took the first opportunity he had to leave his home. He didn't go far. Not the first time. Out into Astramor, around the hills and settlements, edging the weirwoods and dedicing it unnerved him a little too much. He spent some time with the Walk, some time in Idesreign, a little time here and there, and, well, every which where, really. But nowhere suited him. So he came home. There was a replacement, waiting for him. Someone Ciero remembered, even if Iskal did not. He'd always been a fan of Valha's, ever since Ciero had told him of her esteemed position, always demanding stories of her deeds. Ciero had obliged. And now, he wondered if perhaps he shouldn't. It had irked him at the time, but only enough to think that it was all so pointless. Maybe a part of himself had wanted to be great, too, so Iskal would look up to him, too, but— well. No point. Iskal was Valha's protegee now, her favorite, her little successor in the making. And Ciero didn't want to watch the childhood friend he'd known grow into someone like that, so he'd left. Again. Again. Every time coming back, every time hating it, hating to see it. It was a strange sort of blame; he knew it wasn't his fault Iskal had fallen into his mother's clutches, but oh, he wished he'd never spoken a word of his birthright. And he hated her. With all his heart, he hated his mother. Between forays into the world, venturing farther every time, Ciero made friends. Other misfits, like himself, but he never quite let himself in close enough to be one of them. Fear, perhaps it was, or a certain reticence. He'd never liked the feeling of being known. He never liked seeing Iskal, either. It was inevitable; he was all but required to see his mother whenever he returned, lest she get him to, in other, less savory ways, enjoy her company. And where his mother was, Iskal was. Their eyes would meet, sometimes. Other times, words would be exchanged. It was, perhaps, a small bit of pure luck when they met again outside of Valha's supervision. Far outside it, and far outside Astramor. Business, was all Iskal said on the matter. They didn't speak much of anything important, that time. And when they met again, not much more. But meet again they did. And again. And again. Ciero knew it was futile to try and convince Iskal that Valha was anything less than, if not a saint, then at least someone who deserved the utmost respect. He didn't try. He didn't try, and still, he felt Iskal's doubt grow by each meeting. There would me more he'd forgotten, more than just not remembering who Ciero was, their history. Sometimes, he wouldn't remember the last time they'd met at all. And these meetings, though they hurt the most, he always, always, seemed in some way to be seeking from Ciero an answer. He nearly broke it off. More than once, more than twice. But he never managed it. And in the end, it wasn't even Ciero who broke things truly, fully, for good. It was someone else. He still hasn't forgiven them for that.
