___A whisper of wind rattles through bare branches. Moonlight makes snow glow. Blue wisps of light dance off of rime ridden bark. ___"Who dares intrude in my hallowed glade?" the voice, surprisingly deep, curls around you and chills you to the bone. ___"I seek shelter from the storm, nothing more," you stammer. ___Rustling catches your attention. A mouse skitters through the fallen leaves. A claw, the largest you have ever seen, clamps down around the mouse. With one movement the mouse is tossed into the air and swallowed by the largest goaler you have ever seen. His dappled coat disguised him well amidst the icy shadows. A delicate pink tongue flicked out to clean wickedly sharp claws one by one. ___"You will find no shelter here. Leave." ___The wind howled behind you. "Please, let me stay just one night. I can make it worth your while." ___"There is little you could offer that would persuade me, trespasser. But I suppose it would amuse me to see you try. Proceed with your offer, but make it swift. My patience is wearing thin." You shift your weight nervously. This was your only chance to get into the goaler's good graces. It was becoming increasingly apparent that there would be no way to fight your way out of this confrontation, and you needed access to the glade. You just needed to get to the key. ___"What if I offered you... a story?" ___The beast laughed. The sound rattled deep in your chest. "You traveled across two realms, climbed the tallest mountain in this land, and braved the worst storm so far this year, to tell me a mere story in return for shelter in my prison? You should've stayed in your nest, hatchling." You took a deep breath and stood as tall as you could. You refused to be cowed. "Yes, I came to tell you a story. A tale about two lovers and their tragic end, and every adventure that they had in between. It's a tale of love and betrayal and forgiveness and family, and I think that it's one a story that you need to hear because it's about your prisoner." ___"...I'm listening." - | ____________________ |
