Fractal can hear the voices of the deities-always. Whatever they say rings in her head. Her parents were very concerned when her first words were 'be quiet', and it only got stranger from there. No one could figure out why Fractal was always hearing voices, and they were concerned. She carried on one-sided conversations with dragons who weren't there more often than with those who were. Her vision was also poor, there were hundred of what looked to be stars suspended in the fluid of her eyes, a phenomenon no one had ever seen before. She was always seeking out loud noises, trying to find something to drown out the sound. She didn't get along with other dragons her age, making her parents fear that she would never socialize. Fractal did make a friend in the loud, elderly cook of the clan. The sounds of boiling water, roaring fire an sizzling food helped quiet the voices, and the booming tone the cook always spoke in was a help as well. She apprenticed under the cook, to her parent's relief, but Fractal was an older teenager when the cook died, and she ran away, with nothing left to make her want to stay. When she reached the ocean, she found that the sound of the waves dulled the voices to a distant murmur, and she never wanted to leave. Her bright scales were spotted from miles away by the crew of the pirate ship Nerida, and thinking that she was some sort of abandoned treasure, they went to investigate. Captain Liberty, still very young and freshly escaped, was surprised to find a sunburned, partially starved nocturne unwilling to leave the beach. Her love of the ocean and skill at cooking prompted Liberty to take her on as the ship cook. Fractal loved this idea, and was fast friends with the crew-particularly Real, the first mate, who had a similar eye deformation due to an abundance of magic. Real was certain that Fractal would be a powerful mage, even though she had never studied magic-and with his help, she became very powerful. Those who underestimate her or assume she is simply the ships cook soon learn the gravity of their mistake. Fractal is a full-fledged pirate in her own right, deadly with both a sword and the white-hot, sizzling stars she flings from her front claws. She is the second to board an enemy ship, usually hot on Liberty's heels. Fractal never leaves the sea, except in cases of emergency, for whenever she does, the words of the deities rush back into her mind. She loves the Nerida deeply, and all her crew members. |
