Biography
Sonnai shot a random arrow at a tree. It landed right in the core, piercing a few inches of bark. She tugged it out, sighing.
“Nice,” Sydney remarked.
“Yeah, but not good enough.” Sonnai frowned. They headed over to the archery range, a newly installed area. A few lone bulls-eye targets were strewn across the field, accompanied by some wooden dummies. As Sonnai got closer, she realized the dummies were all of different BeastClan’s. A dunhoof centaur, a harpy. Sydney paused to stroke the face of a Serthis. It looked so real.
“Why do they have these?” Sydney murmured.
“You know,” Sonnai said, “the BeastClans are trying to uprise. Again. First our familiars got angry. Then the rest threatened to invade. We’ve gotta be ready... for anything. Anything at all. Even war, awful as that is, has now become a prospect.”
“But it’s so violent.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I know. But we can’t have peace all the time. As long as we're fighting for what’s right, it’s okay.”
“But how do we know we’re right?” Sydney asked.
Sonnai decided not to answer this. She tensed, then relaxed, then tensed. Her muscles ached from running through the shady hills. It had been an exhausting morning. Sonnai’s training regimen was to run up a hill, then fly down. It may have not sounded to bad at first, but how about 32 hills? (Yes, Sonnai had counted). Then she walked a little bit, practicing her archery. Sydney accompanied her for this part. The spiral was too lazy for the whole excersise, but she was more than happy to keep Sonnai company... as long as it wasn’t too strenuous. Sydney kept asking why Sonnai was doing this to herself. But it was important to stay in shape. What she had said to Sydney was true; a war was brewing, like the storm clouds on the horizon. She had to be ready.
She drew her bow, held the birch-wood arrow for a few seconds, then fired.
It whipped through the air, hitting the target with a crunch. It had landed on the edge of the yellow circle in the center. It was technically a bulls-eye, but not close enough for Sonnai.
“Nice hit!” Sydney called. “Right in the center! Great!”
“Not close enough.”
“Stop saying that. You’re already the best archer in the clan. You don’t need to have such high expectations for yourself.”
