STORIES
» LORE: Retalia loved to swim.

A small Skydancer marvelled at the sight of the lake, feeling extremely small standing among the colossal mountains that almost seemed to guard the small clearing against the outside world. The water was crystal-clear, and the lake bed was riddled with perfectly smooth pebbles.

Retalia grinned at the small stones that seemed to lie only meters below the liquid glass water.

Perfect!

She’d made it a tradition to collect a single pebble from every lake her frequently-traveling family visited. They were her prized possessions and she carried them everywhere within a small pouch that was secured tightly around her waist. The pouch was the last thing she received before her parents fled from their lair and their flight, dragging their daughter along with them.

Every pebble held memories. It didn’t matter that Retalia couldn’t tell the difference between them, but it mattered that she had something to hold on to.

She hastily looked at her reflection in the water, her minty coloured fur ruffled gently in the breeze. With a deep breath, she plunged into the lake. Her claws confidently dragged through the water. She hated having wet fur, but after the freedom she felt while diving in the water, a bit of sopping fur wasn’t a biggie.

She passed through a school of tiny fish and she playfully grabbed at them knowing she had no chance or intention of catching one. They fled past her, oblivious to the fact that Skydancers didn’t include seafood in their diets.

and as she swam down, down, down, she became aware that the bottom was much deeper than she’d estimated. Her breath was rapidly running out and the Skydancer realized she wouldn’t make it back to the surface in time.

As the last wisp of oxygen that filled her lungs slowly faded, she reached down only to grab at clear water. Her mind began to go fuzzy at the edges and she desperately thrashed her wings, thrusting herself half a meter lower into the clear water.

Seconds before her conscience faded, her small claws closed around a smooth pebble.

A pebble that would possibly be the last thing she’d touch.

Little did she know that today she’d retaliate against death itself…

A pair of icy colored eyes opened in the water.

They saw clearly.

The Skydancer took a deep breath and water filled her lungs, but she did not choke.

Who am I? why am I here?

Her head ached and taking another breath, she swam upwards, not entirely sure why. When she surfaced, she coughed the water out of her lungs and for the first time in what seemed like forever, she inhaled the air. When she’d partially recovered, she stared at her right wrist.

Around it was a bracelet. A silver chain with 13 spots for small, round stones or something like that.

Stones?

She turned around and peered at the lake through eyes that strained in the bright sun.

Pebbles?

She ravaged her mind for the smallest possible explanation, but nothing surfaced from the murky waters in her brain that confined her memories. Her gaze landed on the pouch that was still wrapped around her waist. Her claws clumsily fumbled with the buckle.

Click

The soaked pouch dropped to the ground with a squelch. It was empty.
What happened?

She knew something was meant to be in there… something important to her. Retalia shook the pouch and an impossibly dry note tumbled out.

You have been given a second chance.

You must retrieve a pebble from the bottom of every lake you’ve visited.

Starting with this one.

Only then will you remember.

She shuddered, suddenly feeling scared and isolated.

How do I know where to go if I can’t even remember my own name?

That day, her journey to remember began.

But she wasn’t complaining.

Retalia loved to swim.
