Biography

Kyanite floated at the surface of a large glittering lake, her shimmering moon colored wings acting as a dock for some small frogs that had decided to join her for some company. Her cobalt body reflected the bright sun into a thousand beams that danced along the sandy lake bottom, startling the fascinated fish who mistook them for food. She lifted her hand from the water, her mulberry runes prominent against her crystal primary. Her parents had named her accurately, and she often marveled at the complexity of a single dragon.
“What makes a dragon a dragon, or a frog a frog?” she said into the warm air surrounding her, her pale yellow eyes turning to focus on a small grayish frog that had hopped onto her chest. “We’re both alive, both have features that let others of our kinds tell us apart, both have all of the same basic needs, yet we’re so completely different” she smiled as the frog merely blinked in reply, and sighed a sigh softer than a breeze nudging a graceful willow before letting herself sink into the gentle waves that rocked her to and fro in the summer sun.
With their host now completely submerged the frogs went their own way, leaving Kyanite free to drift into the cooler depths where the light was muted and her scales no longer sparkled like the valuable she was named after. The imperial thought it was a bit funny, that how no matter what she did or when she went there was always a sense of peace to be found in the place that so few dragons wanted to go. The lake was rumored to be overflowing with monsters and creepy-crawlies created by the arcanist on one of his bad days but so far the scariest thing Kyanite had found was a half rotten log that looked like a three legged dragon wedged under some rocks nestled in a bed of lake grass.
The dragoness unfurled her large wings, and with a single push she propelled herself forward like a dragon sized torpedo through the water. Her belly was tickled by the occasional patch of lake grass, and sometimes out of the corner of her eye she caught the apple red glint of some aquatic creature as it streaked away from the predator only to return a few moments later before darting off again to repeat the cycle. Silly animal Kyanite thought, grinning as she gave chase Didn’t your mother ever tell you you can’t escape a hungry dragon?. The creature proved to be no match for the superior animals refined hunting skills, and put forth a good struggle for an animal of its size before its head was promptly bitten off by a set of thorn sharp chompers.
Pleased with her catch Kyanite let the water clear away the section of water clouded with her preys blood before she paddled to the surface, her lungs warming as they began to run out of usable air. Her head burst out of the water, sending a spray of droplets in all directions as she shook out her mane, eyebrows, and other assorted fur. Even soaked to the bone the empress was beautiful, and it was as if she knew it. The female paddled lazily to the shore, and took no time in drying herself. Once thoroughly preened and presentable Kyanite decided it would do her well to take her catch back to the clan, so that others may have their bellies filled.
With a high jump and a few powerful pumps of her wings the dragoness was off, climbing higher into the sky with each passing moment. It wasn’t long after that the sun began to set, her mind filled wonder and her heart with awe as the setting sun made the sky explode with color. It was as if an artist had painted it, each wisp of cloud perfectly placed for the memory that would last a lifetime. A warm smile bloomed on her face, and it was with a cheered spirit that she descended into the clans territory to tell the youngsters about her adventure. Little did she know it was all a dream and that she was curled up cozily in her nest, snoring happily as she radiated peace and contentment to the sleeping dragons around her.
