┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Cygnus didn’t remember much about his past life, and to be honest, he didn’t really need to. Yeah, sure, a long time ago, he had been mortal and had a family, friends, a clan that he lived with for a while. He had enjoyed hunting, dallied with romance, fought for his clan when necessary. But all that was many years ago… So many years that Cygnus himself couldn’t remember how many had passed exactly. That was the funny thing about being immortal-- time didn’t matter anymore. Or rather, time didn’t really exist anymore.
At least it hadn’t. Until now. But more on that later. The one thing Cygnus did remember, and quite vividly, from his mortal life was how it ended. He had had a close friend, a fellow clan member, and the two would often go hunting together. They had found the location of a beautiful pond, surrounded by weeping willows and lush green grass, and every day they had gone to the pond, swam in it, caught fish, and simply enjoyed one another’s company. After a week or so of this, however, both dragons began to notice something a bit odd about the pond. There were hundreds of birds living in the trees and shrubs around the pond, ducks that swam in its waters, and even tall, elegant egrets that waded by the shore. This, in and of itself, wasn’t entirely strange. What was odd about the birds was that they seemed to be far more intelligent than your average sparrows and mallards. They would watch Cygnus and his friend with knowing eyes, as if they understood everything the two talked about. Their gaze wasn’t exactly hostile, but it wasn’t very comforting either. It was clear that the dragons were unwelcome there. Cygnus didn’t personally care much for confrontation, and while the pond was certainly beautiful and a great source of fish, to Cygnus, it wasn’t worth the hassle of a stare-down from hundreds of creepy birds. Cygnus’ companion, unfortunately, thought otherwise. He was determined to uncover the secrets of the pond, and had settled on a way to do so. There were two large, majestic white swans that patrolled the north end of the pond, and Cygnus’s clanmate was convinced that they were the leaders of the group. He intended to capture one member of the pair and use it as ransom to obtain answers from its mate. While Cygnus thought the plan sounded slightly insane, he was also intrigued, so he agreed to help ambush the swans the next day. Everything went according to plan. Or everything was going according to plan until suddenly, it didn’t. Cygnus’s companion had the male swan trapped in his jaws, but as the bird struggled, the dragon was forced to shut his jaws just a bit too tight, and with a final flurry of wings and feathers, the male swan lay dead in the dragon’s jaws. Cygnus knew things were bad the instant he saw the look in the female swan’s eyes. Unlike her mate, she was much more powerful.. And much more enraged by her mate’s death. With a voice that sounded like it came from an ancient being rather than a swan, she made a non-negotiable demand: a life for a life. Immediately, Cygnus’ friend was on the ground, convulsing, roaring in excruciating pain, while Cygnus stood by, helpless. The female swan was clearly enacting her vengeance, and perhaps against his better judgement, Cygnus could not stand by and let it happen. Shouting over the pained screams of his dying companion, Cygnus begged the female swan to take his life instead and spare his friend. And the rest, as they say, is history. Cygnus’ mortal life ended that day (quite painlessly thanks to the mercy of the widowed swan), but in exchange for his selflessness, the female swan had made him immortal (it turned out she did possess some other-worldly powers). She also gifted him with a new name-- Cygnus, meaning (perhaps ironically) swan. Now Cygnus lived among the stars, watching the mortal world below him with indifference. There were other immortal beings like himself, destined to roam the galaxies for the rest of… well… forever, but Cygnus had given up on companionship long ago and instead maintained a solitary existence. He had come to terms with the fact that his existence would continue like this for all eternity, and honestly, he was pretty okay with it, but one day things (as things always seem to do) changed. The day that another freshly-made immortal being entered the night sky... |
