★★★ HISTORY Benella is a third generation member of Corcair Cion. Her mother, Rosanne, was born to the clan from Dixie and Aeria, two of the earliest, most prominent members. Aeria bore 8 children to 2 mates; Rosanne bore 7 children to 3; Benella watched her mother and grandmother tear themselves apart between multiple partners, and while she respected them and their efforts to propagate their small, but growing clan, she didn't want that for herself. She resolved to place herself and her clan before meaningless trysts with males. She attached herself to the matriarch, Corrinne, and learned all she could about the day-to-day activities of the clan: where food was gathered or grown, what items could be sold to fill the clan's coffers, how to diffuse a variety of tense conflicts between clanmates, and much more. Her mother's last mate before her decision to leave the clan to server the Shadowbinder was an arrogant, pompous, egotistical Skydancer-- with a name to match: Demonstalker. He's traveled from the Southern Icefields in search of a mentor to train him to better serve the Shadowbinder-- the shared interest that attracted him to Rosanne and, in turn, into Benella's' life. It just so happened that a wandering warrior, Felyx, had roamed into Corcair Cion offering any able body aid in combat training and battle experience. Rosanne, Demonstalker, and Hopebringer (another warrior drawn to the clan by Felyx), among others, threw themselves into becoming worthy servants of their deity in the short time that Felyx had chosen to stay with them. Rosanne was quickly satisfied with whatever level of proficiency that she reached, and she departed just as quickly, leaving behind her most recent lover, her cherished daughter, and her youngest clutch, only freshly into adulthood. Benella picked up where her mother left off, guiding and loving her youngest siblings until they, like all others before them, left her behind as well. Demonstalker did not reach his goal so easily. Perhaps they were set too high, or perhaps he wasn't meant to fulfill them. Whatever the cause, he confided his fears in his only friend outside of his life as a warrior, the only person who could never judge or pity him for his failings: his former partner's daughter, Benella. Benella cared for him as she cared for all of her siblings and fellow clanmates, but they could both feel that this was somehow different. She reassured him that if the life of a warrior wasn't his true calling, that it said nothing of his character or worth and that he could have a life and a future at Corcair Cion-- with her. Benella still shadows Corrinne in managing clan responsibilities, but she does so in between tending to her nests and hatchlings. She and their father raise them to know that they can find happiness in a multitude occupations and purposes and that they'll have help every step of the way. To date, the pair has borne, raised, and exalted to the Shadowbinder 9 young dragons, and are patiently awaiting the creation and arrival of their next clutch. |
