Abomination

Story:

Faint light. A fragmented voice that seemed very far away...

"...h good. ... re awake. ...w are you ...ling?"

A splitting headache. Limbs on fire. What?

"You should feel proud. You are a most resilient subject," the voice continued more clearly as a large, dark blur suddenly coalesced. A sharp tapping like a hammer on glass... Head screaming.

Lost. Confusion. "Where-"

"Where are you? Don't concern yourself with banal trivialities. Soon enough you won't care about such things."

Sadness. "Why-"

"Why am I doing this? For science of course! You are probably too far gone to appreciate that now, though."

Silence. Head still pounding. Darkness as eyes close.

"Yes, just relax. Don't try to think. It will be easier that way..."

Muffled clinking. A pinch. Heartbeat racing. Body on fire. Can't move. Can't think. Can't scream. Blinding white light.

Abe awoke drenched in sweat, still reeling from a dream that felt all too real. What did it mean? Perhaps he should tell the doctor about it.

He slithered out of bed and into the lab, his home. The doctor was busy poking at something on the big table.

"Ah Abe, you're awake. Good," the doctor said without looking up from his work, "I need your assistance."

Abe looked down at his feet and tried to think.

"I-i-i had a-a- nightmare," he stammered.

The doctor looked up from his work and stared at Abe unblinking. He hated that look. That look meant he said something stupid again. Stupid, stupid, stupid. After a few seconds, the doctor returned to his work.

"You shouldn't dwell on it. Now be a good boy and fetch me the bone saw, please."

Abe nodded slowly and sulked off to find the tool. Perhaps it was nothing after all. Besides, it was almost all faded away now.

"Hmmm..." Abe mused aloud, pensively, searching the racks of operating utensils and tools. "Why am I here again."

He shuffled back to the operating room, where the doctor was poking at something on the big table.

"Good morning, doctor!" Abe chirped cheerfully.

"Where is it," came the snapped reply.

"What- uhm." Abe looked around nervously. There was something important he was supposed to remember. Something he needed to remember.

"BONE. SAW. PLEASE."

Eeep! That was it. Abe scurried away dutifully, stifling a giggle.
