Ostyn Ralurath-Fennaneth
of the sea
Triton Druid Ostyn emerged from the Ocean protectorate Ralur at age 15, when she came of age. Her family had a tradition of sending all third daughters to the surface to gather worldly experience and become Far Travellers, emissaries to the surface. Ostyn surfaced further from the estuary than she had intended, due to losing her map during the journey to the surface. She found herself caught in the middle of a raging thunderstorm which drove her inland, up the riverbank, until she stumbled blindly into a swamp in the dead of night. She found the creatures dwelling there to be not so different from the deep-sea creatures she was so fond of, and managed to live off the land for three days. While she was waiting out the storms (for it was the season for it), Ostyn was found by a ranging patrol of Druids, who took her in. And just in time too, as the plants she'd picked for her evening repast turned out to be of a species of particularly deadly mushroom. She took the mushrooms with her and pressed them in the safety of the Druid village Fennan, adding them to her journal along with a set of notes full of expletives describing the sheer quantity of plants that are out to kill you on land. The journal at this point was full of pages and pages of drawings of the various animals she encountered, and a flat pouch attached to the back which contained samples of all the plants and flowers she came across. As Ostyn's guiding aspect is the sea, she is of the mindset that change is good and necessary - something which some of her Ocean-people struggle with. Finding her place within the Druids of the swamp proved that this was meant to be, and she moved with that change like the tide. of the swamps During her time at Fennan, Ostyn mentored under a Raven druid by the name of Duskwing, who taught her the ways of their people and the importance of balance with nature. Ostyn never saw Duskwing in their human form, as they had surpassed the limitations of human form and become Archdruid, preferring to live as a raven. During her training, Ostyn focused on the magic of the swamps that gave Fennan life, drawing her power from the water at her feet as much as her Ocean-people drew power from the sea. Like most of her Ocean-people, she was drawn to pole weapons, and her weapon of choice is the halberd. After 15 years living in Fennan, Ostyn realised that it was time for her to move on. She felt the oceans calling to her, and longed to taste their salt on her lips once more. With the blessings of the Druids, Ostyn made her way back to the river and continued the journey she started 15 years earlier, determined to gain as much knowledge of the land as she possibly could - while hopefully vanquishing a few evildoers in the process - before returning in triumph to her Ocean-family. Before she left, Ostyn was gifted a feather from Duskwing's tail, which she added with a length of red twine about the vial of water from Ralur that she always carried, adding an extra layer of love and protection to her treasured item. She added Fennan to her surname in the tradition of her Ocean-people, becoming Ostyn Ralurath-Fennaneth, and thus carrying her Swamp-people as part of herself from then on. |
